A work that manages to be ambitious and effective is something that is almost always to be hailed. Destined for greatness are many of such acts with plenty, like Inter Arma, achieving wide acclaim for all of the right reasons with nothing seeming to stand in their way along the path of domination through an expansive sonic arsenal. However, the underground is never wont to let go of all of its secrets for us to fawn over. In obscurity does talent often lie with there being hundreds of ambitious acts that mostly lurk in the shadows where many of us are not able to easily witness their craft. For the entirety of its run, The Mountain King has been one of the underground's best kept secrets with their newest effort a brilliant addition to a titanic catalog.
A sprawling creation despite having just four tracks to call its own, "Apostasyn" is what it means to be masterful at your craft. Yet, even in the face of such competency after years of honing their skills, The Mountain King never once settles in keeping things consistent or predictable. No two efforts from The Mountain King feel truly similar with "Apostasyn" certainly holding true to that concept with the focus of this record dialing in on the contrasting elements of atmosphere and heaviness to bring forth a cathartic experience that knows precisely how to pull you right in while always making damn sure that you never become complacent nor comfortable. A complicated but extremely well thought out dance between doom, drone, post-metal, and ambiance alongside death and black metal with more than a little bit of a progressive edge, the compelling nature of "Apostasyn" is as dense as it is intensely satisfying to lose yourself in. The Mountain King hasn't needed proof to their high-level craftsmanship for several albums and years now, yet that didn't stop them from going all-in to ensure that this record would be a diverse and utterly bombastic creation, nonetheless. Where many bands describe themselves as acts that push the envelope and think outside of the box, I don't think The Mountain King has crafted a work within normal boundaries for a long time now.
For all that they've dished out thus far, "Apostasyn" is a terrific jumping on point for anyone new to the name with the back catalog more than enough to back-up any and every credit that's brought forth within these four massive pieces. Even in the instrumental realm, The Mountain King is a force not to be underestimated, and I don't think that's going to change for quite a long time.
