Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town
Well, on this the first official weekend of the Autumn, Randwick hosts the first Group 1 of the year in Sydney, the former Chipping Norton Stakes which is now the renamed Verry Elleegant Stakes, in recognition of the late Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup winner, and the Surround Stakes for the Fillies, which belongs in the list of Group 1 races that should be Group 2s.
On the other side of Albury, Flemington hosts the Group 1 Australian Guineas, another one of those building blocks towards either the All-Star Mile or the Australian Derby next month, and both cards are littered with supporting Group 2s like the Blamey Stakes, the Sweet Embrace Stakes, the Skyline Stakes and the Guy Walter.
To be honest, I don't think the Sweet Embrace Stakes and the Skyline Stakes would be two of Kenny Callander's favourite races.
Other noteworthy races include some dodgy Listed races at Ascot, which is in Belmont, and on Saturday across the ditch it's the weekend of the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie, although the bigger highlight in New Zealand right now is Cameron Green pummeling their underwhelming bowling attack in Wellington.
So it's on to Crazy Craig, and after many weeks of not trying, he finally cracked it for another winner last week - Revolutionary Miss at 6/1, if you don't mind umpire... All of it was made possible by his Good Luck Charm!
P(r)ick No.1: Riff Rocket (No.1, Barrier 9) in the Australian Guineas at Flemington (MR8), 4:15pm AEDT
1600m 3YO Set Weights Group 1 Australian Guineas
Trainer: Chris Waller, Jockey: Craig Williams, 57kg
Hello hello again folks it's Craaaaaazy Craig, TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale, and after pulling out yet another reasonably priced winner for you good folk, I spent the rest of the week dropping $20 notes around Bairnsdale in the hopes that people would find them!
Anyway, that was then and this is now, and I best start off this week by starting with Flemington, because the VRC Derby winner is back at the races, looking to do what Hitotsu did 2 years ago and win the VRC Derby, the Australian Guineas and the ATC Derby in the same year, and he resumed 1st Up with a win in the CS Hayes...
Let's go again, Riff Rocket Man, ridden by Sir Elton John!
P(r)ick No.2: Kimochi (No.3, Barrier 7) E/W in the Surround Stakes at Randwick (SR8), 4:35pm AEDT
1400m 3YO Fillies Group 1
Trainer: Gary Portelli, Jockey: Jason Collett, 56kg
Learning To Fly is a deserved favourite for this race, but I think Kimochi will be running a big race, something she's done in all of her 10 starts, and to be honest I have no idea what a Kimochi is, but I looked it up on YouTube and found this video of Lionel Messi splattering the remnants of a cream pie on his face, then washing it off by saying Messi Kimochi!
If it's good enough for Lionel Messi, then it's good enough for me!
P(r)ick No.3: A Lot of Good Men in Race 7 at Ascot (PR7), 4:11pm AWST
1600m Listed Lex Piper Stakes
Trainer: Trevor Andrews, Jockey: Paul Harvey, 55.5kg
Hahahahaha, what a great pair of names for the favourites - Russian To The Bar and A Lot Of Good Men...
Speaking of which did you hear that Crazy Colin is a Russian?
Yes, he's Russian To The Bar!
However, on the other hand, when you've got A Lot Of Good Men, you're probably going to want the truth...
WELL, YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Enjoy your weekend folks, stay safe, stay negative, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, and remember, I'm Crazy Craig, and that's why they call me Craaaaaazy Craig!
