Feeling abandoned after her long-term foster placement breaks down, teenager Amy is sent to live with a new family, the Dawsons. They seem nice, but Amy is reluctant to trust them. She doesn't want to let herself believe this new placement will be a forever home, only to be let down again.

Told with a dual timeline of 'before' and 'now', the book captures a realistic balance of how some placements can break down despite best intentions and some can successfully offer the support and care needed. We see how the Dawsons have patience, try to understand and slowly build trust. The book also explores themes of identity and loss.
