How beautiful is this cover?! I've admitted it before, I do judge books by it's cover!! Historical fiction taking readers back to President Hoover's day of homeless camps named Hoovervilles and extreme differences in societal classes are apparent, particularly in this story where a Society young lady meets manipulative narcissistic wealthy man and the runs away to Hooverville to find herself.

Annaleise Winston is fed up with the abuse from the man her neglectful mother decides she must marry. When Frank leaves for a week to a party in Washington, Annaleise decides it's her chance to pack up and leave the hostile environment called home. She has the sense to pack up the cash Frank gives her as her allowance and several articles of clothing and a journal.

Little does Annaleise know, protecting herself from thievery is absolutely necessary. She's attacked and robbed of all her cash and some jewelry. But she's alive and two boys about her age come to her aid. These boys, Thomas and Peter, turn out to be residents in Hooverville and show her around. Their community accepts her in and they all become like family she's never known before. Will anything ever come out of this new relationship with these boys or others in Hooverville?

From sickness and death to joy and true love, Annaleise experiences it all in Hooverville. Emotions she's never experienced before are new to her. She even tries canned beans and hot dogs for the first time. Her life of privilege and Society didn't teach her much about real life outside the mansion she grew up in.

Fear is something that never leaves her. She has nightmares and fears what would happen to her if her betrothed should find her. Frank isn't afraid to abuse her and she knows this fact. She's lucky to have survived his abuse in the past. But being forced to marry him is not ideal for Annaleise. What will happen if frank ever finds her?

Thank you to Kayla Joy and Rachel's Random Resources for access to Hooverville by Kayla Joy. I give this book 5 out of 5 tiaras as it took me through so many emotions while I hoped Frank would pay for being so abusive. Knowing the possibilities of abuse constantly in the back of your mind is no way to really live!!
