Years ago, I had an email conversation with the creator of Dales of Merchants, Sami Laakso. At the time, he spoke excitedly of a new game he was working on - something bigger and more ambitious than anything he's done before.

It's name was Lands of Galzyr.

Before we dive in, let's stock take Sami's previous titles to ground our expectations for this upcoming title.

Dale of Merchants is one of the best pure deckbuilders I've played, definitely the best I've reviewed. It makes use of a lot of familiar mechanics in new ways to create painstaking decisions. It's fast, it's tight, and it's only been improved by the expansions.

Where Dale of Merchants had a solid foundation of deckbuilding to build upon, Dawn of the Peacemakers feels like an entirely new game genre. As such, it didn't feel as polished as the previous title. But the story writing and the world created throughout the game is so incredibly well done, I found myself forgiving its short comings.

From what I've seen of Lands of Galzyr, it's taking place in the same world as the previous titles, Daimyria, with the gameplay changing again. This time, it looks like a board game RPG akin to Arkham Horror, Journeys in Middle Earth, and Fortune and Glory.
