This is the third book of the Tobacco Girls by Lizzie Lane. While I've never read the first, I did read and review Dark Days for the Tobacco Girls. This third book is just as exciting and full of twists and I enjoyed every moment!
Bridget and Maisie are still tobacco girls, but they also want to do their part to help out so they have been assisting with first aid following air raids by the Germans. I can totally feel their desire to do more than just making cigarettes and why not actually go out and help rescue people who may be injured after a raid?
As time goes on, their close friend, Phyllis, writes to the pair, sharing that she misses them and offering just a little about where she's at while working for the WAAF overseas. Phyllis' husband Robert shows up at Bridget's doorstep looking for Phyllis. Everyone thought Robert had died while fighting the Germans. Actually Robert says he and a few others were separated from their unit and they were bombed at and he barely made it out. But here he is, looking for his wife and looking quite frail.
Between telling Phyllis her husband is alive and avoiding telling Robert where Phyllis is, Bridget and Maisie step up with the call for more ambulance drivers while training up new first aid nurses. Maisie is also training up new tobacco girls, who volunteer to help out in first aid, too. It's amazing what women did during wartime while the men fought for king and country.
All the girls have their own issues they're going through that they don't openly share with others. They all seem to hide their personal lives until they are absolutely comfortable sharing, which makes total sense. I mean, who would want to share their personal lives when it's not ideal? It's this tight knit groups where the secrets are shared and the pressure is taken off the individual. It's vital for our mental health and I hope readers realize it's importance in their own lives.
I particularly love the trio of friends. I'm part of my own trio where we share what's going on in our lives and let off steam and stress. It's been fantastic, especially during this pandemic!
A special thanks to Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random Resources for access to Fire & Fury for the Tobacco Girls by Lizzie Lane. I give this book 5 out of 5 tiaras because of all the twists and turns, the grit and the persistence of these tobacco girls.
Lizzie Lane is the author of over 50 books, a number of which have been bestsellers. She was born and bred in Bristol where many of her family worked in the cigarette and cigar factories. This has inspired her new saga series for Boldwood The Tobacco Girls.
