My 5* Review:
This is the first book in the new Corium University Trilogy by C.Hallman and JL Beck. It is a dark bully, enemies to lovers, revenge romance centred around Quinton Rossi and Aspen Mather. It is also a story about how children suffer for the bad things their parents do. Hidden away in Alaska is an old castle which has become Corium University. Founded by a group of Mafia leaders so they and other dangerous villains could send their children there to make them better criminals.
Quinton is the King of Corium due to being the heir to the Rossi family. A year ago he was a different person, happy and content, but then his whole life suddenly changed. He is now full of anger and hate and wants to escape the mafia life he has been born into. There are so many secrets and hidden truths surrounding his family but no one will give him any answers. His father is a tyrant and ruthless leader so he has come to Corium Uni to get away from home. Quinton made sure his best friend Ren came with him because he is like a brother to him as they had grown up together.
Quinton has a darkness inside him and is plagued by nightmares so hardly sleeps. He is fed up with hiding the pain inside and decides anyone in his way will be a target and outlet for him so he is really happy when he sees Aspen is there. Her father snitched to the Feds about the Rossi family and is to blame for some of his bad memories so she is the enemy and will suffer.
Aspen feels the world hates her due to what her father has done. His sins definitely affecting her and she doesn't know how much more she can take. The trouble is her parents insists she in the safest place as the one rule at Corium is no killing. Called a Rat by the students and treated badly by the staff, she struggles to survive. I loved how she tries to convince herself she is strong enough to last the year and cope with whatever is thrown at her but she never took Quinton into consideration.
She becomes his new obsession, he plays mind games to get the control over her he desires but he isn't prepared for the consequences of his actions. He is shocked how she calms his mind and actually starts to enjoy their strange time together. Aspen constantly lives in fear and worries worse is to come. She hates all Quinton does to her but then is so confused when he shows a caring side. Their interactions are toxic at times and at others they can't deny the forbidden attraction. Is he really a bully or by some twist of events is he protecting her?
I know at the start you are meant to hate Quinton and all he does because he viscious and cruel but he is actually so interesting and complex. Once the secrets his family are keeping start to be revealed you can understand his need to find out the answers and why he behaves the way he does. His relationship with his sister Scarlet is sweet, she is a great character and brings a lot of fun into this twisted tale. The one I did hate was Matteo and I also thought Xander Rossi was so conniving that I don't trust him at all; along with a few others that I have my doubts about !!
A horrendous case of misunderstanding, mistakes and heartbreaking revelations leads to the cliffhanger. There is also a question of family interference and a surprise betrayal. All their lives are again turned upside down. I can't wait for the next book Drop Dead Queen, to see how everyone deals with the results of their actions. What does the future hold for this couple?
