Red X by David Demchuk is a novel about the disappearances of gay men in Toronto's LGBTQ village. In this book, as more and more men go missing, it becomes clear that something supernatural is responsible and the monster has been stalking them for decades.
I was completely enthralled by this book. Demchuk has created a novel that blurs the line between real events and fictional horrors. This heightens the creepiness as it introduces a supernatural threat into a horrifying story we already know. I also thought his world building was fantastic and felt very immersive.
I really liked Demchuk's writing style. He weaves his own narrative perspective with actual facts and a stream of consciousness style, which I found very compelling.
Finally, I found the characters very interesting. It was fascinating to be pulled into their lives and find out what would cause the monster to go after them. I also liked how Demchuk ventured into metafiction by inserting himself into the book.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a creepy and suspenseful tale based in a Toronto news story that we are all familiar with.
Red X by David Demchuk is available now from Strange Light Publishing.
