Gregor and the Marks of Secret (the Underland Chronicles #4: New Edition), 4: Amazon.co.uk: Collins, Suzanne: 9781338722796: Books

This is the fourth book in the series of Gregor the Overlander. It differs from the others.

At the end of the last book, Gregor discovered that his mother was going to have to stay in the Underland for a few months. This placed Gregor and his family in a dire position as his mother was the only one earning full wages, working two jobs to keep them all afloat. In the conclusion, Gregor found himself telling their neighbour, Mrs Cormaci everything. Overall this contributes little to the actual plot of this book but helps explain how the family kept going with the only able bodied adult now quarantined in a different world.

Gregor's mother being in the Underland means that he and his sister, Boots, are now regular visitors there rather than only going down when forced because of a prophecy. They have started taking part in regular life in the Underland and Gregor is really enjoying it, considering he and his family previously hoped they would never return. Although, not all of Gregor's visits are fun and games, since he has to go to lessons on echolocation with Ripred the rat on a regular basis which does seem to be going at all well.

It is different to the other books in that Gregor does not set out on a quest to complete a prophecy and so does not have that as guidance. At first, he is not aware there is one, although it's hinted he will be involved in another at some point in the future. There is trouble though, and Luxa is determined to solve it. She can't do it alone and several questers from their previous adventures are thrown into the mix. Gregor is once again thrown into the path of danger as he discovers more new things about the Underland as well as being pulled back to parts he already knows. Time is still spinning a story of right and wrong.

I'll be honest, I find it the darkest of all Gregor's adventures. No quests, no wars, come without sacrifice. The whole series made it clear this was not going to be a tale without any sacrifices, that death would follow them. That was pretty much spelt out in the first prophecy and it was continued on through the other books. It was just always a question of who would survive.
