Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane (the Underland Chronicles #2: New Edition), 2: Amazon.co.uk: Collins, Suzanne: 9781338722772: Books

This is the second instalment to the series Gregor the Overlander.

In the first book, Gregor followed his sister down a vent into a world beneath their own. He fulfilled a prophecy in which he saved his father, but there were losses and Gregor was dubbed the Warrior. Gregor vowed to never go back but it seems that fate cannot be avoided. There are more prophecy's and once again and Gregor is once again left with no choice but to go to the Underland and complete a quest before he can leave it again.

Previously, Gregor made a band of friends who helped him complete the task. On this occasion he has another group to help him. His new team actually consists of a few of the former band, but there are new additions too, people with different abilities and once again, not everyone is quite as they seemed at first.

Gregor is bonded to the bat Ares, who saved him from a deathly fall instead of saving his previous bond, Henry. Gregor and Ares might be bonded and sworn to protect each other but they don't really know anything about one another. There is a lot that Gregor does not understand about himself, or about how the Underland works. Nor does he understand his part in it all.

Luxa of course appears again and this is very much about how she deals with what happened to Henry. Despite her previous struggles with Gregor, the pair are now clearly friends for life. You don't go through an ordeal like they did and not come out of it closer.

Ultimately the prophecy in this adventure seems to question what kind of person Gregor will choose to be. He may choose to be the Warrior that everyone thinks he is, or he may choose something else. He certainly has a few lessons to learn about certain people, the ways of this other world that he realises is so utterly separate from his own.
