Q&A with Susan Buchanan
Can you tell me a little bit about your book?
The Dating Game charts the life of 38-year-old recruitment consultant Gill, who, fed up with her friends setting her up with blind dates, decides to join a dating agency for the busy professional. Set mainly in Glasgow, The Dating Game is a laugh-out-loud tale of Gill's dating exploits. But will she find love?
Where did the inspiration for your book come from? A friend of mine had joined just such an agency and we would pore over the profiles she was sent. And the Barcelona part came from my having lived there and loved it.
If you could describe your book in one sentence what would it be? - Chick lit without the fluff
What is a typical writing day like for you? – I don't have one! I am a freelance developmental editor too, so I work simultaneously on my own books and my clients'. I've been relaunching my backlist and that has been a lot of work, so I hope from now on to have more regular writing slots. Two-three hours a day, in the morning, would be my ideal. If I could write 2-3K a day, I'd be happy. Once I get started I am very productive. It's the procrastinating that's the problem!
If you could recommend just one book to read, what would it be and why?
So hard. The Food of Love by Anthony Capella. I am a big foodie, although with young kids I don't get the chance to eat out as much as I would like any more. I love Italy, where it is set, and speak fluent Italian. The combination of food, romance and Italy won me over. Of course there are lots of other books set in Italy, but apart from this being written by a man, it had a different focus to the usual romantic novels. A true treasure.
Who are your favourite authors? – so many: John Grisham, Milly Johnson, Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Sophie Hannah, Jessica Redland, Sarah Bennett, Sophie Kinsella, Jenny Colgan, Cathy Bramley. I could keep going!
Is writing your only job? If not, what is your other job?
To expand on what I said above, I work as a developmental editor, copy editor and proofreader for other (mainly independent) authors. I cover so many different genres and love my job.
Tell me something interesting about yourself (that's not in your author bio!)
I've experienced both a monsoon and an earthquake in Tokyo, and also a tornado in Texas.
What are you currently working on?
I'm working on some revisions for a publisher as well as writing the second book in my Just One Day series.
A big thank you to Susan for answering my questions, I loved reading the answers! Carry on scrolling for your chance to enter the giveaway!
About The Author:
Susan Buchanan lives in Scotland with her husband, their two young children and a crazy Labrador called Benji. She has been reading since the age of four and had to get an adult library pass early as she had read the entire children's section by the age of ten.
Susan writes contemporary fiction, often set in Scotland, usually featuring travel, food or Christmas. When not working, writing, or caring for her two delightful cherubs, Susan loves reading (obviously), the theatre, quiz shows and eating out – not necessarily in that order!
