For this new episode of the Book series & Me, I will talk about the series: These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong.
An overview of the series
This series is a duology where you follow two main characters, Juliette and Roma, who are the heir of two gangs divided by a blood feud. This is a Romeo and Juliette retelling. This series was written by Chloe Gong and is published either by McElderry Books or Hodder & Stoughton.
This series is followed by a new series called Foul Lady Fortune which is set in the same world (available on the 27th September 2022.)
Book by book
Book 1: These Violent Delights (or TVD)
Summary: In the 1920s in Shanghai, two rival gangs continue a blood feud started years ago: the Scarlett and the White Flowers. Following a love betrayal, the heir Juliette was sent to New York, and she is now back as the rightful heir of the Scarlett gang. However, the city falls into madness that makes people claw themselves and finally kill them. To put an end to it, Juliette accepts to work with Roma, the heir of the White Flowers, who is also her first love… and betrayal.
Book 2: Our Violent Ends (or OVE)
Summary: This one is set some times after the end of the last book. I can't say a lot without spoiling the previous book (and we don't want that, do we?)
Did I like it and is this series worth it?
My rank for this series is clear... there is none!
This series is so worth it! You will feel a lot as you have everything to make you weep, scream, smile, laugh. You live the story like you are in it. The first book can be sometimes hard to follow when you're not used to descriptive writing. However, it's the best as you are diving into that city and its struggles, making you part of those books.
The historical parts take a lot of space, but it makes the story believable even if you have an element of fantasy. I find it very interesting to learn about events that happened in the past. You also have a page where Chloe Gong explained what she changed to help the story and what she didn't change.
I think that I gave a little clue at the beginning of this post, but the answer is YES! September isn't coming fast enough. I'm dying to read the story of Rosalind in Foul Lady Fortune.
