I absolutely love Agatha Christie! She writes such compelling mysteries that keep readers guessing. When the most recent adaptation of The Murder on the Orient Express came out, I was so excited! And I was not let down either. I felt like the movie did the book justice and I loved the cast of characters. In the end, when they hint that there has been another murder, I was so happy that they would make another adaptation. I have read Death on the Nile and while it wasn't my favorite Christie book, it is still a great mystery. Then they released the cast for Death on the Nile. My heart plummeted. Don't get me wrong, Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot is perfection! I could watch him play Hercule Poirot forever! But the other cast choices left me disappointed.
But you all know by now that I try to stay optimistic, because who knows?-Maybe I will be surprised. The filmography and setting are spectacular. It definitely gave off that 1930s glamor vibe. One thing that I absolutely loved is how we get a little backstory regarding Hercule Poirot. It may even pull at your heartstrings.
But let me get into the casting choices. First, is the obvious...Armie Hammer. I actually didn't know much about him before seeing this movie because I haven't seen him anything prior to this movie. And when I looked him up...ugh it made me sick. How is this man still getting jobs??? He isn't that great at acting anyway. His character, Simon Doyle fell so unbelievably flat. He could have been replaced with anyone else because he brought nothing to this film.
Then there was Gal Gadot. She is stunning! But, she was also pretty flat. Besides Kenneth Branagh, the best contributions to the film were Tom Bateman, Russell Brand, Emma Mackay, Rose Leslie, and Sophie Okonedo.
The main mystery stayed pretty close with the book. I did appreciate how the movie hinted at the effects of colonialism. That was really the only thing that really bothered me in the book. So overall, it wasn't as good as The Murder on the Orient Express, but I still enjoyed the mystery coming to life with the gorgeous costumes and set! But maybe next time, let's not hire problematic actors? I do hope this series gets another installment!
