Slowly but surely, the world of metal is starting to see some real representation from the lesser-known regions of the world. South America, in particular, has long been a world of interest to someone like me as even though there's a good amount of metal acts strewn across its forests, mountains, and coastal plains there simply isn't enough when we take into consideration the heritage and mythologies that the continent has to offer. It has always been a matter of time before we would be graced with such introspective into the many different cultures be it bit by bit as we're subjected to being drip-fed such glory. With its debut, Ysyry Mollvün is poised to be a real forerunner in the underground for such excellence.
Immediately, whenever I think of metal from South America that manages to capture even just one of the many mythologies at a time I find myself set before the likes of Downfall of Nur and Kaatayra who have both done absolute wonders in their own rights, and it's only fitting that the former of those two had a part to play in the crafting of what Ysyry Mollvün has to offer in its six-track self-titled debut album. Don't let that make you think that this is a mere clone or another extension of the man behind Downfall of Nur, though. In every respect, Ysyry Mollvün is its own creation with its own wonders to be discovered. The focus maintains on the black metal rather than the folk instruments despite their vital role in the performance at large, very much the embodiment of quality over quantity, with the six tracks offered to us here utterly compelling in every rite as it's for the entirety of the runtime that Ysyry Mollvün maintains a constant and consistent level of energy with the riffs never once repeating themselves, quickly allowing them each to take on their own identities in an epic tale that spans years and the lives of many. It's a viciously engaging performance with every inch of this debut immediately showing us what Ysyry Mollvün is capable of without compromisation without any element feeling lacking in any form or even the slightest bit weak with each step forward being an all but powerful one and the very tapestry of Ysyry Mollvün's make of wonders starting off on what's possibly the best possible start we could have ever asked for.
The rivers of heritage and pride in it run incredibly strong in this release as Ysyry Mollvün has made a debut that is the very definition of stunning right out of the gate virtually without flaw, and it's even after spending hours immersing myself in the waters of legends past that I can't get enough of this excellence. One can only hope that it won't be long before this act comes back to us from the depths of the deep mythology, and I'm sure that whatever comes next will be exactly what this small but growing corner of the metal underground is always salivating for.
