[New post] The Double Doorway by Praveen Jayamanna

Considering it was written by a teenager the writing is mostly coherent and readable but could use some editing and development. There is repetitive/redundant statements and meandering exposition. Despite all the words nothing much is said or occurs. There are also very confusing passages and inconsistencies.
For example, Jack receives a memento from his father when he was two and later in the paragraph it is stated his father went away a couple months later. Yet Jack is 11 while his sister is much younger (her age is unclear since the author oscillates between writing Mel as acting as an infant or sometimes a toddler)
There are problematic depictions of a character with DID, with other characters referring to him using derogatory terms such as crazy or lunatic. This mistreatment is never questioned or disagreed with by the character or the narrative. It was unpleasant to read and while the author being a child might have not known better the adults who edited, read and published the book should have.
I get odd book of Henry vibes with the adults being either helpless and incompetent or being written like immature children which is juxtaposed against a mature child protagonist. While not bad in itself or uncommon in children's media was taken to absurd exaggerations here.
The ending was rushed and felt very abrupt and the story felt incomplete as if it were breaking into third rather than ending.
The character/relationship development was sudden and unearned, the characters never seemed to bond nor did the redemption/forgiveness seem valid. The characters calling each other friends is not enough to convince the readers they are in fact friends now.
Overall
The book is neither well written nor does it have a good story. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, not even a child. Rather, if the premise sounds interesting to you I'd recommend Gregor the Overland instead.
The author being very young is obviously very talented and I hope he continues to work on improving his writing in the future.
