The Last Resort by Marissa Stapley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Miles and Grace and Markell run an exclusive, high-end resort in Mexico for couples looking to save their marriage. Over the course of two weeks, each pair undergoes intensive therapy at the luxurious retreat, under the watchful eyes of the seemingly-perfect couple and their dedicated staff, often with positive results according to their reviews. But dark secrets lurk under the glowing reviews, and the new couples arriving for their two-week getaway, where they must give up all electronic devices and Internet connection are about to find out that these secrets - and their own - may not stay buried. As a brutal tropical storm approaches the resort, things reach an impasse, and someone winds up dead.
I love the vacation gone wrong/stranded at a remote resort genre, so I instantly jumped on this book when I read the description, and I'm happy to say that this is another great addition to the growing genre! We know from the beginning not only that someone is dead, but who it is, so we spend the rest of the book working backward watching and waiting for the big reveal. And its quite a doozy - it's quite creepy watching someone slowly descend into madness and then seeing how everyone realizes what is going on.
Plus there's plenty of twists along the way, some I certainly never saw coming, some that were a little more obvious. But overall, I thought everything really flowed together well. The reveal was fantastic. I don't want to give anything away, but it had a real Agatha Christie feel to it.
There's lots of good characters in this one and the author does a good job of letting us get to know the main couples and the issues between them and in their pasts that led them to the resort. They all have interesting backstories and I was invested in each couple and their stories. The author did a great job with balancing the attention paid to each.
Overall, this was a great thriller and a quick, easy read. I greatly enjoyed it!
