I just love reading classic stories, and this one didn't disappoint. I actually picked it up while I was at my library browsing a while ago.
This book is the first of Edith Wharton's undisputed masterpieces. Its publication in 1905 changed her literary fortunes forever.
The story is about Lily Bart. She is a beautiful and witty as well as sophisticated person. She is accepted by old money and courted by the growing tribe of nouveaux riches. However, as she nears thirty, her foothold becomes precarious. She is a poor girl with expensive tastes, she needs a husband to preserve her social standing and to maintain her in the luxury she has come to expect.
When it was first published, this book shocked the New York society it so deftly chronicles, portraying the moral, social, and economic constraints put upon a spirited woman who dared to claim the privileges of marriage without assuming responsibilities.
This is a great novel. I will certainly try and purchase it in the next while since I think it is one of these stories that should be on my shelf.
