There's nothing quite like being able to lose yourself in an album of crunchiness, heaviness, and excellence the likes of which simply can't be swept aside for any reason because of its own power, talent, and tenacity. Modern doom has become an unbelievable haven for anyone who finds themselves constantly itching for such a performance from bands be they new or old for such quality can never be denied for all that it offers the listener in more than one form. When it comes to the underground veterans of Deer Creek, we come before a name that has become true masters of what it means to deliver such a sound in an exquisite, uncompromising fashion that is all but supremely compelling. With their first proper full-length album, it's never been a better time to bathe in Deer Creek.
It's always fascinating for me to come across bands like this who have been around for so long given that it's always more than enough time for that band to truly master their craft in ways that are absolutely staggering for all intents and purposes, and there's always something particular about doom metal that makes such a case all that more intriguing in my experience. From its undeniable riffage to stupendous atmospheres that are able to cover a vast swathe of attitudes, emotions, and mentalities, it's damn near always compelling when an act like Deer Creek manages to stick around for so long. With all of that, it's pretty damn evident that "Menticide" was all but destined to be a powerhouse of creation at its very conception as Deer Creek is not only the result of years swirling in the underground but also an entity that embodies much of what many conceive to be what doom metal is all about. There's nothing fancy at play. No musicians trying to push the sound forward. Nobody attempts a sound that has never been done or to create a landmark release for throngs to remember in the years to come. The very essence of "Menticide" is a raw manifestation of what doom has always been from its partial yet deeply connected "fuck you" attitude that comes together swimmingly with a massive presence born out of vicious riffage and intoxicating melodies as monolithic and lumbering rhythms carry the performance great heights and beyond.
It's hard to come to any other conclusion with "Menticide": Deer Creek has matured in a way that is all but pitch-perfect. This is what many strive for in the modern landscape of doom metal, and it's only on rare occasion that we're able to be gifted with a creation like this in even a fraction of the excellence that's been presented to us here. There isn't a single shred of what Deer Creek achieves with "Menticide" that I would dare change for anything for it's in every given way that this is a creation worthy of standing as a landmark of the underground for years to come until Deer Creek inevitably return.
