The day I learned that Rush Limbaugh had left this earth is when I found out he had written a children's book series. It's been on my lost of books to read someday, but it didn't have any priority until I found myself teaching about the Mayflower Compact to a dozen 3rd graders. That's when I decided getting my hands on Mr Limbaugh's books might be helpful for my lessons. Luckily, all five books were available from our local library!
In Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims, Rush Revere is teaching a history class. He uses his time travel horse, Liberty, to show students videos while he travels through a portal into the time in history the students are studying, in this case, onto the Mayflower and later Plymouth Plantation.
Two students, Tommy and Freedom, time travel with Mr. Revere and Liberty. They get to meet important historical figures like William Bradford and Myles Standish. The students ask brilliant questions and learn about life on the Mayflower as well as the challenges for the first colonists.
This book and the series is in color. There are images, maps, photocopies of signed documents, drawings, and so much more that adds to the learning environment.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres because it's a glimpse of what life might have been like during that time. I give this book 5 out of 5 tiaras because it's interesting to imagine time traveling along with Mr. Revere, Liberty, Tommy, and Liberty to see first hand what it was like on the Mayflower and Plymouth Plantation.
