I'm excited to welcome you today to my stop on the blog tour for outstanding thriller The Pain Tourist by Paul Cleave. Thank you to Anne Cater and Orenda Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this fantastic book.

About the book:

How do you catch a killer…
When the only evidence is a dream?

James Garrett was critically injured when he was shot following his parents' execution, and no one expected him to waken from a deep, traumatic coma. When he does, nine years later, Detective Inspector Rebecca Kent is tasked with closing the case that her now retired colleague, Theodore Tate, failed to solve all those years ago.

But between that, and hunting for Copy Joe – a murderer on a spree, who's imitating Christchurch's most notorious serial killer – she's going to need Tate's help. Especially when they learn that James has lived out another life in his nine-year coma, and there are things he couldn't possibly know, including the fact that Copy Joe isn't the only serial killer in town…

About the author:

Paul is an award-winning author who divides his time between his home city of Christchurch, New Zealand, where most of his novels are set, and Europe.

He has won the New Zealand Ngaio Marsh Award three times, the Saint-Maur book festival's crime novel of the year award in France, and has been shortlisted for the Edgar and the Barry in the US and the Ned Kelly in Australia.

His books have been translated into over twenty languages. He's thrown his frisbee in over forty countries, plays tennis badly, golf even worse, and has two cats – which is often two too many.

My Review:

The Pain Tourist by Paul Cleave is an intense and twisted thriller that completely blew me away. Fast paced and original, it is a book that grips you from the very first page and doesn't let go until the final, exhilarating page has been turned. With twists, turns, shocks and surprises that just keep on coming, this is the kind of thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. I honestly didn't think the author could top last year's The Quiet People (which I absolutely adored), but with The Pain Tourist he has somehow done so with ease.

James Garrett has been in a coma since the brutal execution of his parents nine years ago. So when he unexpectedly wakes up, Detective Inspector Rebecca Kent is given the task of closing the case that still remains unsolved to this day. With Copy Joe on the loose, a serial killer who is imitating the most notorious killer in Christchurch, Rebecca soon comes to realise that she's going to need the help of Theodore Tate, her now retired colleague who failed to solve the case all those years ago. But then they learn that, while in his coma, James has lived out another life and knows things that he couldn't possibly know - including the fact that Copy Joe is far from the only serial killer in town…

What follows is a dark and intense thriller that leaves you breathless. The Pain Tourist is a stunning read that keeps you on your toes throughout, with the story twisting this way and that as it throws in dark, shocking and intense curveballs along the way that really do take you by surprise.

Paul Cleave is an exceptional writer who has written an intricately plotted and original story that kept me riveted from beginning to end. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling the plot, so all I will say is wow, what an absolutely stunning read this is! An intense and exhilarating rollercoaster of a story that really does keep you on the edge of your seat, The Pain Tourist, like The Quiet People before it, is a superb and original page turner of a thriller that I loved.

Highly recommended.
