Introduction: When did you last hear an Indian news station share news and information rationally? When did stoic news anchors become moral cops and entertainers? When did the National News Debate become a sensation? What exactly does 'breaking news' mean? How socially conscious are we? Why are we so critical of political leaders? The recent Karnataka election results are a clear smack in the face to those who harbour biases. Why are Nirbhaya-like situations on the rise? Why don't we, the government and families, prioritise mental wellness before material possessions? Why is sexual education still frowned upon, yet Bhoota vaidya is a curriculum subject? Why is TRP more essential than an individual's freedom? Why does rape against women matter but not rape against young boys? Why are laws biased and skewed against women? Is it necessary to amend the laws and regulations?
Read Vivek Chandran's The 9 p.m. discussion. The book is more than a fiction novel; it reflects the angst against society. Review: Vivek Chandran's novel "The 9PM Debate" is an enthralling modern tale that draws attention to a serious societal issue: rape. This novel, set in the dynamic city of Mumbai, not only captivates readers with its tale but also inspires them to speak out against sexual assault on women in our country.
The plot centres around the gang rape of a lady named Sujata, popularly known as Durga, by a Mumbai-Virar gang. Radhika, the protagonist, is an experienced TV journalist who works for ABTV (Akhil Bharat Television). She uses her network and communicates with authorities in the police and legal professions in order to bring about societal change through her influence. Radhika intends to host a revolutionary debate on her programme, bringing the rape victim face to face with her attackers—an unparalleled occurrence that has the power to revolutionise society.
This book, titled "The 9PM Debate," goes into this unusual type of argument that deviates from the norm. It allows everyone to see the horrible spectacle in which a rape victim and her assailants take part in a live TV discussion at 9 p.m. As Sujata and her four rapists—Mahavir, Bimal, Sukhdev, and Riyaz—confront each other in a live broadcast, a slew of others take advantage of the situation.
The author expertly weaves the tale from multiple perspectives, revealing insights into the inner workings of a TV discussion. The narrative takes readers behind the scenes of this media phenomena, offering light on meetings, agendas, TRP (Television Rating Points), and other complexities. Radhika's troubles and the admirable efforts she makes to choreograph this momentous encounter are also explained in the story.
However, before diving into the complexities and responsibilities of the people, the author takes readers on a colourful cultural voyage around Mumbai. Though not without its bright spots, the city is regarded as a chaotic and depressing place, characterised by transit issues, traffic congestion, slums, and high crime rates. The story focuses on the perils that women passengers confront on Mumbai's local trains, shining light on the ubiquitous underlying menace.
As the live debate progresses, a large number of participants and opinion leaders join in, offering their unvarnished viewpoints. Inspector Tariq Khan was suspended after being accused of assaulting several young females, which surprised everyone in the studio and outside. Similarly, the home minister is being chastised for failing to deliver on all of her pledges about the protection of women in the country.
Readers may initially believe that the story centres mostly around the dispute, but as they advance, the work's full depth becomes clear. As the plot progresses, surprising twists and turns occur. It reveals faults in the police system, which is supposed to help rape victims but falls short in delivering comprehensive care. The story also emphasises other interrelated socioeconomic concerns that must be addressed. In this narrative, the fundamental pillars of society are tested, emphasising the urgent need for a change in people's perceptions about rape for the welfare of all.
Highlights:
A.Wonderful statements like: 1.Age sex location, finance and religion were largely irrelevant to the makeup of a victim. Everyone was fair game. 2. An unsophisticated rape victim in a simple salwar kameez held appeal across all social delineations.
B. Why do celebrities always face blame for promoting products, while companies are not held accountable for false promises?
It's worth discussing why companies are not sued for their deceptive claims, instead of solely targeting celebrities.
C. Do the names Rajdeep Goswami and ABTV ring a bell? It's quite amusing, isn't it?
D. The characters of Anu and Zaheer resemble numerous real individuals in the media industry. It's a guessing game, and anyone can fit into their roles regardless of language.
E. Here are some noteworthy observations I've made and would like to share:
*The character Laxman in Bihar reminded me of Kaliyappan in Nizhalkuthu.
*Advocate Namish's attire and office setup were described vividly.
*The pros and cons of social media and its exploitation by political parties to manipulate public opinion.
*The hand-painted hoardings, Amul Ads, Parrotta, and beef curry—typical favorites of Malayalis in the 80s—evoke a sense of nostalgia for those who grew up during that time.
*Sujata's talk effectively explains the distinction between collateral damage and sacrifice.
Conclusion The story effectively communicates a significant message to society and its citizens in many ways. Vivek expertly constructs a thought-provoking narrative of justice, demonstrating his exceptional storytelling ability. His command of the language and straightforward narrative make the reading experience enjoyable and intelligible. This novel shines in many ways, yet its length may be a small disadvantage. Nonetheless, reading this book and being inspired to make constructive change in society is highly recommended.
Finally, this book reminded me of Anniyan's and Mudhalvan's movies' climax where it is shown that reality can be achieved and looks better the creating a utopia to the people.
Last but not the least, a sensational sequence in the story will for sure wonder you!
