AB6IX offered an sleek, fashionable vision when they first debuted in 2019, but as the years have gone on I've struggled to maintain excitement in their music. Part of this is down to lack of consistency. They've struggled to maintain a definable sound and musical perspective, which makes a lot of their work feel generic.
New single Loser has a decent chorus and very little else. It's a prime example of a song working against itself. Its centerpiece offers a nice sense of lift, but the verses are dull and lifeless. The song's first twenty seconds are among the most tedious stretches K-pop has rendered in recent memory. Rather than use Loser's central riff as a jumping-off point, the vocals and rap sink energy with uninspired scraps of melody. And after a promising bridge, the track forces an ill-fitting dance break that shares no connective tissue with anything around it. What a mess!
Loser's sprightly hook attempts to right the ship each time it comes around, but even this segment wears thin with time. The result is a song that collapses in on itself, unsure what it wants to be or wear it wants to go.
