There is a certain beaty and excitement in not knowing preciselty what you're going to get when you sit down and get into an album. Of all the different reaches of both rock and metal music, the progressive realms of both genres can easily be the most unpredictable. Anything is often on the table when we take into consideration all that be thrown under the vast term of "progressive", and it is on occasion that we're given a piece that doesn't just deliver on the promise such a style constantly teases. For their latest, Grant the Sun certainly does not disappoint.
While there are many, many different factors that obviously go into any grand work of a progressive nature, the instruments truly are the centerpiece for whatever goes on within any given album. It can be all too easy for any act to look over that fact should they not understand what they're truly dealing with be it by accident or an individual creative decision. In the case of what Grant the Sun has brought to the table for "Voyage", it is clear right from the very beginning that this band moved with complete intent at every step of the way, knowing precisely what moves they wanted to make and how to carry it all out to maximum results. For eight tracks that never tread the same territory nor fail to succeed, Grant the Sun has made a real slam dunk of an album with "Voyage". More than capable of it all when it comes to progressive metal from the riffs to the differing levels of heaviness that all come together surprisingly well to the array of vocal talent that only further elevates the glory brought from by the impaccable instrumentation, there's no way for me to deny Grant the Sun's colorful performance that pays off in spades time and time again here.
This is what progressive metal could always be should when its taken to its lengths with it being exceedingly clear already that Grant the Sun is a name we need to keep a sharp eye on. "Voyage" takes the best aspects of what this style can be in the right hands without becoming too flashy or caught up in its own talent that quickly becomes disillusionment with the quality out of nothing but arrogance. Adeptly avoiding such a grim fate, Grant the Sun does nothing but soar with this opus.
