Based on a series of plausible events in a regional Victorian town
This is it, the last metropolitan Saturday of the 2022-23 season, and most of the training and jockeys premierships have already been decided, save for the coveted Australian jockeys premiership title, which in recent years has been dominated by West Australians, namely William Pike and Chris Parnham, and after a massive day at Tamworth, Aaron Bullock has hit the lead with the big 200 winners for the year, while Queenslander James Orman rode 2 winners at Ipswich to sit just 1 back on 199, with Pike just a bit too far back on 187, and they're all well clear of 4th-placed Ben Thompson on 152.
Among other events, it'll be the last Saturday for South Australia's Hall of Fame trainer Leon Macdonald (His last runner is Aban in Race 8 at Balaklava on Sunday), Racing Victoria Chief Steward Robert Kram departs after some 40 years as a steward, and the fact that people barely noticed Robert Kram in the last 5 years since Terry Bailey left, even with the Darren Weir saga, is probably a true compliment to him.
So, the meetings on Saturday include Moonee Valley, Randwick, Belmont (which is in Burswood), Eagle Farm, and in fact the only race of note is the Listed Lightning Stakes at Morphetville.... and there appears to a rogue appearance from the Roebourne Cup, and for those of you who don't know a damn thing about Roebourne, it's named after a man who was part of the Pinjarra massacre, which is ironic considering it now has quite a large indigenous population.
On that cheerful note, it's on to Crazy Craig once again, looking to improve on his average efforts of late, and in honour of Mick Jagger's 80th birthday, here's The Rolling Stones with an appropriate song to end the season... this could be The Last Time, I don't know!
The song that proved the base track for The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony... and led to them getting absolutely shafted by multiple people for recording it.
P(r)ick No.1: Salire (No.4, Barrier 6) E/W in Race 3 at Randwick (SR3), 12:30pm AEST
Hello hello everyone it's Craaaaaaazy Craig TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale, and would you look at that, another racing season is coming to an end, and the horses are going to have their birthday on Tuesday!
One day I'm going to get a birthday cake for all the horses that decided to win for me, and I'm going to get a cake for the ones that didn't do jack shit, although I'm going to give them icing decorated into the words "HEART AS BIG AS A PEA."
It's what they would've wanted.
Now, I'll start off this week by going up to Sydney to try and pluck one out around lunchtime, and believe it or not I'm actually picking something in these Highway races, which I pretty much never do, and I see a horse named Salire from the Thoroughbred capital in Scone, who comes into this dropping in grade from a BM78 to a Class 3, and although he does rise 5 kilos, I see this is a very winnable race for Salire, ridden by old man Nash and trained by Cameron Crockett!
You know they named a Miami Vice character after Cameron Crockett?
They even got Don Johnson to play him, and he got his own theme tune!
P(r)ick No.2: Lievore (No.12, Barrier 8) E/W in Race 8 at Moonee Valley (MR8), 5:05pm AEST
On to good old Death Valley, a place where I never find a winner, especially on Friday nights when they all seem to disappear under the lights prior to the corner, and given it'll be dark by 5 o'clock, I'm more than happy to do the same stupid crap all over again!
Lievore, who could be a relation of Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh, ran 2nd at Sandown 1st Up, then had to race 4 wide without cover at Flemington, which meant she was never a winning chance and ultimately finished 5th and 6 Lengths behind Delicious Tycoon, when all available evidence suggests she should've been in the placings!
3rd Up here, the great male model himself Craig Williams goes on to replace Tatum Bull, and I can't quite think of a song, so here's another great male model, Derek Zoolander!
P(r)ick No.3: Vast Art (No.8, Barrier 10) in Race 9 at Belmont (PR9), 4:50pm AWST (6:50)
1400m 78+ Rating Drummond Golf Handicap
Trainer: Darren McAuliffe, Jockey: Chris Parnham, 56.5kg
You know what, let's end this racing season with a tribute to The Gabster by picking the No.8 in Perth, although unfortunately it isn't a 1000 metre race to get the juices flowing, and the No.8 this time happens to be Vast Art, who had built up a nice little picket fence with white paint, which included a win in the Raconteur, but that all ended last start a fortnight back, when he had to lug 60kg, but still he gave it a hell of a good show, only to be run down late by his sparring partner Top of the Pops who had a 5kg pull on him, and it helped make a difference.
Speaking of a vast array of art, here's the appropriate video clip....
An old episode of Art Attack from 1996!
I remember watching Art Attack one night with Crazy Colin after we finished off a carton of Victoria Bitter....
By the next morning, Colin was using one of the cans to make a circle!
Enjoy your Saturday folks, stay safe, stay negative, GAMBLE WITHIN REASON, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, and remember, I'm Crazy Craig, and that's why they call me Craaaaaazy Craig!
