Review
The Quest for Snacks is an adorable adventure that will appeal to anyone who loves cats, snacks, or magical quests. The adorable, cartoony illustrations done in vibrant colors add to the fun of this short, yet delightful read. Though I imagine the book is meant for emerging readers, I can see tweens enjoying this one, as well. (And, of course, adults!) The cuteness factor here means that I will surely need to find book two soon.
Since the story is written for a young audience, it moves swifty, but still manages to pack in a bunch of adventure and suspense–and even a subtle moral lesson. The cats are briefly introduced as both magic and snack-loving and then they're off to Mewmaid Ocean! There they engage in a high-stakes competition before moving on the Mount Lava. Intelligence and quick wit are needed for the second challenge, rather than physical prowess. Then, finally, their kindness and compassion are tested in the third stage of the quest. In a few short chapters, readers learn that both cats have strengths and they work well as a team. And that selflessness is rewarded in the end. Not bad for a rapid-fire story!
I would definitely recommend The Quest for Snacks for newly independent readers and those just being introduced to the comic book format. The book is short and so are the dialogue and the sentences, making it a perfect entry into reading alone. But don't let the target age fool you. The story is enchanting for all ages!
