First and foremost, a large thank you to Reedsy Discovery and D.W. Whitlock for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
After being handed an early copy of the series debut, I returned for another early proffer by D.W. Whitlock. In a story that spins the reader in many directions, Whitlock offers readers something worth their while, as things take a dark and highly intense turn from the opening pages. Well worth the look for the curious reader!
Many have wondered about the work of the reclusive Clarissa St. Claire, though no one is quite able to to connect the dots. In a research facility away from the prying eyes of any country, St. Claire has something on the go that is both nefarious and mysterious, an odd combination. This is sure to attract many lookey-loos, but only a select few will likely sacrifice it all to know what awaits them.
While it is free from any prying eyes and regulations, there are many who feel they need to get answers and are willing to sacrifice to get what is needed. Enter Alex Schofield, who has amassed not only the fearlessness required, but owes someone a favour. Schofield is left to find his way there and delve into the research project known only as 'Nocturne'. What awaits him is more than just a scientific project, but actually a complex system that could revolutionise the world. As Schofield pushes deeper, the truth about Nocturne comes to the surface, which only causes more concern, as Clarissa St. Claire's real plan is soon revealed. Armed with his wits and a determination to shed light on what's happening, Alex Schofield must forge onwards in hopes of saving not only himself, but protecting those who could feel the Nocturne impact without even realising it. A curious piece by D.W. Whitlock that leaves the reader with more questions than answers.
While I do read quite a bit, there is something about D.W. Whitlock's work that sticks with me. Readers can be assured that they will be pulled into the middle of a complex story and left to simmer for a time, before eventually shaking themselves off and feeling the chill. The narrative flow is strong and keeps the reader in the middle of the action throughout, providing a strong push and some decent development. Characters are impactful throughout the journey as well, providing some colour and flavour to a dark and sinister tale. The plot, which is ever-evolving, does not leave time for the reader to catch their breath throughout, which can be a good thing in this case, as there is so much going on. D.W. Whitlock is one to watch for the years to come!
Kudos, Mr. Whitlock, for another intriguing piece that will sit with me for a while as I try to make sense of it all.
