Blurb: It's his first night in London. And her last…
Ruby's leaving London. She's not running away from her ex per se, but an exciting opportunity in a new city has landed at the perfect time.
Nic is moving to London. After a bad break-up, he's excited to see where big-city life could take him.
When a chance meeting throws the pair of them together for just one night, it's clear that this could be the start of something special. But there's one problem: she's leaving, and he's just arriving. So, after tonight, they'll never see each other again . . . will they?
From the international bestseller comes a story of two strangers, two cities, and one night that changes everything.
Review: I've had this in my Libby library for a while and while I was away it was the perfect time to listen to another treat by Laura Jane Williams. One Night With You starts on Ruby's last night in the big smoke and Nic's first.
Nic is purchasing Ruby's love seat and although her and her flat mates have Facebook stalked him they have never met in real life until now.
There's something about Nic from the off but fresh from Liverpool, hiding his own demons it takes a while to learn more about him. Jackson one of Ruby's flat mates offers to help him with the love seat and in turn invites him back to the flat for pizza. Ruby is leaving and is embarking on a year off men to work on herself - but one last flirtation can't be wrong can it? Ruby and Nic instantly hit it off and I honestly thought I had sussed out the story. Apart from right person and wrong time I was oh so wrong in my assumptions.
There's so much more to the pairing and what makes them who they are separately and together. The night they share is perfect and as a romantic at heart - Laura's words really do tug at my heart strings. Nic speaks in the way every girl honestly wants to be spoken to, giving Ruby such an ego boost.
I have to mention the characterisation, these characters are easily loveable and by the end I was rooting for each and every one of them. The flat mates Candice, Jackson and Ruby really are a great bunch and as Ruby is leaving the dynamic obviously changes. Nic almost instantly makes a friend in Jackson and the fact Jackson is so social really helps Nic taking him out of his shell and growing threefold in London Town. But no matter what happens he can't meet anyone a patch on Ruby and Ruby can't stop thinking about that night.
I will now mention JP - JP's story was heartfelt, real and raw. I love how the older guy isn't scared to speak his mind. The one thing about him was the effect he had on Ruby. He didn't dismiss Ruby's year of her but he did make her think is she really closing off her heart completely. If so is she missing out on the best thing that could ever happen to her because of her past with an awful ex.
There are a number of themes that are paramount in this novel but the one that impacted me the most was Ruby realising her self worth. There was also an element of keeping too ourselves and how both Nic and Ruby benefited more when they shared their woes. A number of quotes resonated with me…. 'I don't need a distraction, I need to dance.' 'Being brave with my heart makes me a superhero.' And 'Love him as a friend or love him from afar'. Ooooh and peace - 'not in spite of everything that happened because of it, it's made me who I am.'
This novel showcased so many things from genuine sadness, to the good and bad aspects of social media and how unguarding your heart could be exactly what you need. I resonated a lot with Ruby and Nic and this novel will stay with me.
Laura Jane Williams has a writing style that honestly makes me feel seen and happy. This novel had so many omg moments in not only the story but how it resonated with me. I have a few more of hers to read but I definitely will be getting to them soon.
