[New post] Album Review: Greta Percha – The Motions

When Taylor Swift releases an album, like she did on October 27th, it swallows up the sun. In the dark, it can be difficult to find the gems… but that's why websites like the Indy Review exist. We do the hard work for you. And we've got quite the gem for you; her name is Greta Percha and her new album is called The Motions.
With The Motions, Greta Percha has created a cohesive bass-driven melodic album that shows off her vocal range and talent for music production. Some songs are silky sexy smooth, and others make you feel like she's just kicked you out of bed. She draws instrumental motifs that are reminiscent of Black Keys, Sofi Tukker, and Deadmau5. Her songs have a fullness to them, rounded out by the variety of instruments and her massive knowledge of sound. She includes rocking belts, poetic rhyme, and gentle coos throughout her 14 song masterpiece.
Some songs that stand out include "If You Don't Know What You Want", which features her vocals in a sultry play against a formidable baseline and big brass. Another, "Someday Somehow", paints an almost underwater downtempo fever-dreamscape and shows off Greta's inner siren. The album even features a "Smooth Intermission" prompting us to grab a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from the wine fridge, with some wisdom she learned from her mother. She carries us through the journey with a warm touch and a wink.
"The whole album is just fun for me, from start to finish."
Although Greta only appeared on Spotify in 2020 with her pandemic album, "The Dragon". Her career spans much farther back, and is worth taking note of: she received vocal training and toured Europe with renowned vocal coach Bob Westbrook (whose other students include BritneySpears and Justin Timberlake). And by the time Greta graduated from High School, she had already produced a full length album (not on Spotify) and sang for the Pope. While attending college, she competed in Eurovision, representing Lithuania, and made it to the top ten in her home country, twice.
The, now, 31-year old talent left the industry in her early twenties to become a dentist, citing the chaotic and ungrounded nature of the business. She never left music though, and has a beautiful relationship with it on her own terms. And most impressively, she writes, sings, produces, mixes, and masters everything herself. Read that again.
"I'm not owned by a record label, I don't eat bread from it, I'm not worried about what the audience will think- which means I can put out what I feel is true art. I'm not here to sell you."
And even though her intention isn't to sell us…we at the Indy Review are quite impressed with what she has accomplished with this album, and give it our full recommendation. It's groovy, playful, and gives just enough of that crunchy bass to weaken our knees.
The Motions was released on October 27th, of 2023 and is available for streaming on Spotify.
