Welcome back to my re-read, recap, and reaction to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. This post will only have spoilers through the current chapter.
You can find my previous chapter recaps HERE.
Chapter 12: An Old Pipe
NOTE: The following chapter summary comes from wot.fandom.com
Point of view: Gareth Bryne
Gareth Bryne and his ex-soldiers are still following Siuan Sanche, Leane Sharif, and Min Farshaw (though he still doesn't know their true identities). He has reached Lugard, where they pick up the trail again. Even though it doesn't seem to be worth traveling so far to catch them, Gareth will not stop. Gareth tells his men a story of how Siuan and Elaida had Morgase order him to move guards back from the Murandian border some years ago but he never found out why.
REACTION
Another short chapter!
So... basically nothing happens here except that Jordan reminds us that Gareth Bryne is still chasing Siuan & Co. His POV here is pretty much the same as his last POV. He's chasing after a pair of eyes, wanting to learn why they broke a sacred oath to him. And to answer that question - and perhaps also to get out of the house after an unplanned early retirement - he is willing to lead many of his long time soldiering comrades out on the chase.
Jordan might have been able to shorten this chapter substantially and tack it onto the end of Siuan's last chapter, but I think given the infrequency of Bryne's part in this story, Jordan is probably right to spend some more time with him, letting the readers get to know him. It appears that he is going to be a more important character going forward (multiple POVs = narrative importance.)
At this point, we can kind of game this out a little bit. Siuan is on her way to meet the Rebel Aes Sedai in Salidar. She is unwittingly leading one of the "Great Captains" to their encampment. What would the rebel Aes Sedai need with one of the foremost military minds in the world?
The Wheel Weaves as the Wheel Wills.
