I have come to really enjoy Diane Capri's work, primarily in another series she has been writing for the last decade. When I stumbled upon Capri's Michael Flint collection, I was immediately pulled in by the action and unique perspectives offered. Flint is gritty and willing to bend the rules to get results, which is always something alluring in a protagonist. When Flint is approached to help a woman locate her sister, he is prepared, no matter where the investigation leads. What he discovers, after a few brick walls, is truly scandalous and keeps him dodging bullets and accusations. Trying to get to the truth for his client, Flint does everything he can, while uncovering a truly horrid organisation. Capri does well and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.
Hanna Campbell has come to accept that her life is not quite what she would have hoped. She was detained and kept prisoner in North Korea for a time, a period she is still trying to synthesise. More recently, Hanna's mother passed away, which crippled her for a time, but it was the loss of her sister that left Hanna feeling utterly empty. When she notices someone who appears to be her sister, Greta, Hanna is flummoxed and sure she is seeing the woman long-thought dead.
Reaching out to Michel Flint, Hanna hopes that he will be able to live up to his hype. Flint stands behind the charge that he can find anyone or anything, in any location. While this may be a large promise, Flint has results to back him up. Hanna begs Flint to find her sister, even if it means proving that she was lost at sea years before, as many have been led to believe.
While Flint is ready to take on the case he will need some help, calling on his friend and colleague, Carlos Gaspar. They begin to work the case, discovering a black-market human organ ring that is being run by ruthless men. One Ernst Hedinger is known to Flint, which only adds to the intrigue. While trying to ascertain the status of Greta Campbell, Flint will have to keep himself one step ahead of the likes of Hedinger or face sure death.
Working with Gaspar and a few other allies, Michael Flint will travel into the eye of the storm to locate the elder Campbell sister. It will not be easy, but Flint has a reputation to keep up and a passion for risk, which will surely take him on adventures that others would never accept. Uncovering the ring is but one task that falls upon Michal Flint, with Greta Campbell's whereabouts plaguing him at every step. Capri does a fabulous job with this series, keeping Michael Flint front and centre throughout.
I quite enjoy this series and all that Capri has poured into it. While I am used to her Hunt for Reacher books, the Michael Flint collection is much grittier and even more dangerous. The narrative is built on this risky behaviour, but that adds a great sense of excitement that is sure to keep the reader hooked until the final page turn. There have been only three books to date, all of which I have devoured, but am glad to see Capri is prepping another book, which is sure to have new story arcs for the reader to enjoy.
Character development is key to the series' success. Capri has crafted the Michael Flint character effectively, proving that he can be successful with all the risk-taking that he holds dear. There is still a great deal about Flint that is unknown, but I hope that will change as the series progresses. There is a rich secondary cast as well, all working to advance their own views and perspectives. Those working on both sides of the action emerge, keeping the story flavourful and full of cutthroat action. I can only hope Capri will keep things gritty and on edge, as this is one the great advantages to this series over some of her other work.
The plot is always a key part to a strong novel. Capri has a great deal of experience building strong twists in the story that are sure to impress the reader. The richness of the piece is like few novels i have read recently and there is so much to enjoy. I am eager to see what's to come with this series, as Michael Flint seem always ready for whatever is tossed in his direction. There is more to come with this protagonist and a series that is sure to keep Capri's name talked about around many a virtual water-cooler.
Kudos,. Madam Capri, for proving your versatility and keen attention to detail.
