Reading books from Malayali authors is always a blissful time! I have an emotional connection with the state of Kerala, Malayalam language and culture as I studied in a Kerala catholic school in Hyderabad. My classmates are all Malayalis, and my visits to Kochi felt surreal while reading this story.
Coming to this book, 'Heart on a Platter' by Dr.Eby Thachil, delves into the lives and choices of two distinct women, Malini and Betty, each with their aspirations and personalities. The novel unfolds a gripping narrative encompassing ambition, betrayal, love, and justice as these two women grapple with the repercussions of their decisions.
Eby Thachil, a seasoned storyteller, skillfully moulds authentic and engaging characters. He presents the intricacies and challenges of human relationships with candour and sensitivity, utilising vibrant descriptions and dialogue to infuse life into the story's scenes.
The book is structured into 85 small chapters, each honing in on a distinct phase of the women's lives. The initial segment introduces us to Malu, a charming and determined woman ready to go to great lengths to realise her dreams. Engaging in a scandalous affair with Rajesh, a married and successful businessman, she aspires to gain wealth and status, inadvertently causing harm to him and his family. The second part of the story introduces Betty, a sharp, confident woman with lofty aspirations. Her encounters with Dr. Roy Verghese, a urologist drawn to her beauty and intellect, lead to a series of calculated moves that will leave him stunned. The third part uncovers how fate intervenes, leading to unexpected justice for both women.
The book is captivating and maintains its hold on the reader until the end. It delves into greed, desire, deception, loyalty, forgiveness, and karma themes. The moral and ethical dilemmas the characters face raise thought-provoking questions throughout. With its polished writing and meticulous editing, this work deserves praise.
'Heart on a Platter' successfully establishes the ambience of a typical middle-class household. The central focus on Pradeep and Malu, who fervently yearn for a child and are willing to go to great lengths to fulfil their desire, is compelling. The depiction of the archetypal Indian mother-in-law, self-centred and unfeeling, despite Malu's respect, adds depth to the narrative.
Furthermore, the seamless integration of prevalent social issues, such as smoking and gambling, which afflict our society and disrupt countless households, strikes an emotional chord with readers. It's impossible not to empathise with Litty's trials and tribulations. Litty's character, portrayed as patient and composed, endears her to the reader, making her a standout personality in the story. Also, at the end of each chapter, the author provided a glossary of non-English and native Malayali words(which I am very familiar with (--- haha, all smiles) is appreciated.
In conclusion, 'Heart on a Platter' is a must-read for those who appreciate realistic, thrilling, and thought-provoking novels. I recommend this book to others for its well-crafted plot, compelling characters, writing style, and the thought-provoking message."
