I'm the hotshot—both on and off the track. I know how to work the crowd and show off. And I'm good at it.
I've had to become very effective at putting on a show.
But my agent is not a fan of my over-the-top antics. So she did something I still can't believe . . .
She called in the press—the media. Specifically, the reporter who hates everything I stand for. And now, he's tasked with showing the world a different side of me.
Yeah . . . Good luck with that.
Soren
I'm a sports reporter, but I'm so much more than that.
My social media following has allowed me to be more. To do more. To try and help my corner of the world do better and be better.
I believe in accountability. I believe in integrity. And that sports professionals are obligated to be a moral compass to their fans.
I'm loud and outspoken about that point. Maybe more so with Royal Dutton—the loudmouth, crude racer with absolutely no morals.
And now, I'm supposed to find the redeeming side of him. I took this job to find something deeper within him. The good guy inside.
Yeah . . . This is going to be impossible.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]
The Hotshot vs. The Reporter by Nicole Dykes is the second book in On the Track series. Royal Dutton is a hotshot on the track and decides to live his life by that persona. It isn't until fans start pushing back against him that his agent decides it's time for a change. That change comes in the form of reporter Soren Adams. Soren has been hired to give Royal's publicity a facelift, unfortunately he can't stand the guy. He has decided to give it a try because the money is good and maybe there's more to Royal than anyone knows. That turns out to be very true because as Royal lets Soren in both men find themselves drawn together in completely unexpected ways. But fame comes with struggles and the past finds many ways to come back and try to ruin any future they may have together.
Royal Dutton comes off like a jerk but there's so much sweetness and vulnerability under his outward facade. He loves his animals and his friends, even if he makes everything seem like a joke. His past hurts him so deeply that he chooses to pretend it never happened to keep his head above water. Soren Adams is someone who has always stood up for what he believes and wants to tell the truth even if he means hurting the reputations of the people he writes about. He just never would have guessed that there were so many layers to Royal and that he would want to un-wrap every single one. The two give each other support by just getting to know one another before anything more happens. Yes, it is a very quick start to things but as Royal said, he's a racer, everything he does is quick 🙂
He kisses me again, softly and sweetly, but I feel it all the way down to my toes.
"What do you want?"
"You," I say easily because he's all I want.
He smiles. "I want you too."
I've enjoyed the On the Track series so far even though I'm a F1 girl. This one didn't have much racing but these racers' reputations and fan bases are what keep someone alive in the sport. This story was very focused not only on Royal's public persona but also his past and how much it affected him on the day to day. When he finally opened up to Soren about everything, the two took a very important step towards a long and meaningful connection. I am looking forward to getting to know more characters within this world and am excited for the next book.
4 stars for Royal and Soren going off the record off the track.
