Ropa Moyo is no stranger to magic or mysteries. But she's still stuck in an irksomely unpaid internship. So she's thrilled to attend a magical convention at Dunvegan Castle, on the Isle of Skye, where she'll rub elbows with eminent magicians.
For Ropa, it's the perfect opportunity to finally prove her worth. Then a librarian is murdered and a precious scroll stolen. Suddenly, every magician is a suspect, and Ropa and her allies investigate. Trapped in a castle, with suspicions mounting, Ropa must contend with corruption, skulduggery and power plays. Time to ask for a raise?
This third outing for Ropa takes her away from her familiar Edinburgh stomping grounds and see's her instead on the Isle of Skye. Not everything is unfamiliar, her friends Jomo and Priya are along for the trip as well but this is a much more isolated Ropa than we've seen before.
Ropa is attending a conference of Scottish magic with her mentor when what should have been a relatively easy trip goes horribly wrong as a cultural exchange is ambushed and a priceless magical artifact stolen in the chaos.
Ropa is one of the people in attendance not under immediate suspicion given that magic was involved in the heist and true to style she jumps into action. What follows is a tour through the politics of Scottish magic and deception at every turn as Ropa tries desperately to unravel the theft while trying simultaneously to solve the puzzle of the ghosts trapped in eternal torment in the Castle itself.
There was definitely a feeling of set up for the next book especially towards the end but that's OK, it worked well for this story and I'm excited to see where Ropa's journey takes her next.
