If you are a book lover like me, you probably rely on Amazon book reviews before buying your monthly dose. But book reviews on Amazon can be misleading, sometimes.
Now, don't get me wrong.
What I am trying to say is that just like movies, books can mean different things to different people. For example, one of my favorite authors is Umberto Eco (you'd know this if you have followed me long enough).
But barring a few bestsellers, most of his books have a rating of 3.5 or 4 stars, which isn't exactly awe-inspiring. Of all the Umberto Eco books I've read, I wouldn't give any less than a 4.5-star rating.
Clearly, picking the right book on Amazon is not as straightforward as it seems. It's a trivial issue, sure, but it's one that bugs bibliophiles. That's why I've come up with a few pointers. These can come in handy for both fiction and nonfiction lovers.
These should help my friends choose the right book when Amazon book reviews are the only metric you have. Let's dive right in:
1. Use the 'Verified Purchase' Filter
Alright, first things first. Reviews from verified purchases are more trustworthy. They're from people who bought and read the book.
2. Start with the Stars
The star rating. It's the quickest way to gauge a book. Think of it like a first impression.
Books with four or more stars usually mean they're well-received. But, don't just stop there. A high rating doesn't always mean it's the right book for you. Why? Read the next tip.
3. Quantity Matters
A book with a perfect 5-star rating but only 20 reviews could be a red herring.
Check the number of reviews. A book with hundreds of reviews has a more reliable rating than one with just a handful.
More opinions give a clearer picture.
4. Read the Top Reviews
Now, let's get to the meat of the matter - the reviews themselves. Start with the top positive and negative reviews.
They're usually well-written and give you a balanced view. What did readers love? What didn't work for them? This part is crucial.
5. Look for Specifics
Keep an eye out for specifics in reviews. General comments like "Great book!" don't tell you much.
Look for details about the plot, characters, writing style, and pace. These nuggets of information are gold when choosing a book.
6. Spot Patterns
As you read through reviews, look for patterns. If multiple readers mention they couldn't put the book down, chances are it's unputdownable.
Similarly, if many complain about a slow start, brace yourself for a slow burn.
7. Helpful Votes
Look for helpful votes against every review. In my opinion, they are the best indicator of a review's relevance.
Remember not everyone leaves reviews on Amazon. Many readers visit the review section to express their agreement or disagreement with existing reviews that echo their own experience with the book.
Reviews with a higher number of helpful votes indicate that many readers found the review to be particularly insightful or representative of their own experience.
Look at the image below. Both reviews are for the same book. One review, despite coming from a Top Reviewer, has few votes, while the other has more, likely reflecting wider agreement with its perspective on the book.
8. Compare Against Your Taste
As I mentioned in the introduction, taste in books is subjective. Compare the reviews to your preferences.
Love fast-paced thrillers? Skip the books where reviewers mention a slow pace. A fan of complex characters? Look for mentions of well-developed character arcs.
Interested in in-depth analysis? Look for reviews that praise the book's comprehensive and insightful exploration of its subject.
9. Beware of Spoilers
A word of caution – spoilers. Some reviewers love to give away key plot points.
If you see a spoiler warning, skip that review. No one likes a spoiled ending, right?
10. Don't Ignore the 3-Star Reviews
Three-star reviews are often the most informative. They usually come from readers who found the book okay but not life-changing.
These reviewers usually take time to articulate specific aspects they liked and disliked. They also highlight any divisive elements of the book.
For instance, if several 3-star reviews mention that the book starts strong but loses steam, this could be a recurring issue for many readers.
11. Look Beyond the Book
Sometimes, reviews discuss the quality of the book's physical copy or the Kindle formatting.
While not about the content, these aspects can affect your reading experience, especially if you're particular about print quality or e-book layouts.
12. Don't Forget the Customers Q&A Section
The Customers Questions & Answers section on Amazon can be a treasure trove of insights.
Readers often ask about specific aspects of the book, and the answers can reveal a lot about whether it's a fit for you.
13. Take Negative Reviews with a Grain of Salt
Some negative reviews can be about personal taste rather than the book's quality.
If a reviewer didn't like a sci-fi book simply because they don't enjoy sci-fi, that's not helpful if you're a sci-fi enthusiast.
14. Look for Reviews on Similar Books
If you loved a book, look for reviews on similar books. Often, reviewers recommend books that have a similar vibe or theme.
15. Trust Your Gut
Finally, after all the research, trust your gut. Sometimes, a book just speaks to you. The choice is yours. Don't let a couple of negative reviews sink a ship you haven't even boarded.
If something sparks your curiosity, grab a sample, read a few chapters, and see if the story sets your soul on fire.
