Crazy Craig, the man who backed every Damien Oliver ride at Ascot and was 33% correct
I'll be honest, at about 3:30pm on Saturday, as North Beach pummeled the crap out of us, I was getting ready to field a flood of complaints that I should never have allowed Crazy Craig to even consider putting up 9 tips for a jockey he considers a thief...
And then the last 3 races at Ascot became part of the epic story of the life of Damien Oliver - Two almighty tragedies, a betting suspension, met with some of the greatest victories you'll ever see.
Think about all the great jockeys that had big send offs, but none of them produced an ending as brilliant as what Ollie produced.
So moving on from last weekend, this weekend we celebrate a day of Festivus Racing (Although the poor buggers in North Queensland have more serious things to attend to) before some day of gift giving on the 25th, and there's a couple of slightly decent races, namely the Bernborough Plate and the BJ McLachlan at Eagle Farm as the Magic Millions draws ever closer, and the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst at Ascot, the last major race in Perth before the Perth Cup on New Years' Day.
Now it's on to Crazy Craig, and obviously with it being Christmas and all, and seeing as he loves playing Elvis Presley, I figured we'd dive straight into 1957 and Elvis' Christmas Album, still the greatest selling Christmas album in human history, and pound-for-pound, what was the best song off that album?
Here Comes Santa Claus... right down Santa Claus Lane!
How convenient that Santa would go down a street named after himself.
The Donovan P(r)ick: (Mellow) Yellow Sam (No.8, Barrier 1) in Race 6 at Moonee Valley (MR6), 3:05pm AEDT
1200m F&M BM70 Handicap
Trainer: Lindsey Smith, Jockey: Fred Kersley, 57kg
Ho ho ho everybody it's Craaaaazy Christmas Craig, TBFB, Scratchie King of Bairnsdale, and let me say that a Mr D.Oliver of Perth is an ABSOLUTE GEM, because he donated several hundred scratchies to the down on their luck last week…
And he never actually bought any of them!
How crazy is that!
But, that was then and this is now, and before I have to sit through another Christmas with Crazy Colin, I've got to sit through another crap day of summer racing, and to make it even worse I decided to go to The Valley and bring up another edition of the Donovan Pick, and if my memory isn't totally ruined, the first one was for Atlantis Beach last year, who did actually win on at least one occasion...
Which had me saying Hail Atlantis.. beach!
Well, this time we've got MELLOW Yellow Sam!
Quite rightly!
I do like how they named the horse Yellow Sam...
And the favourite South of Houston has a yellow cap and yellow silks.
The Fortified P(r)ick: Stormy Tawny (No.3, Barrier 6) E/W in Race 8 at Ascot (PR8), 4:59pm AWST (7:59)
1200m 66+ Rating Mares Epona Classic
Trainers: Grant & Alana Williams, Jockey: Steven Parnham, 55.5kg
Can't go wrong with a 12YO Galway Pipe in a storm!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Happy Festivus for the rest of us!
