Experimentation is something that you can only find in either the fringes of what is possible in metal or within the innermost depth of the progressive reaches where only the most astute and dedicated are to be found where they seek to further the insanity through trials, tribulations, and more than enough blood, sweat, and tears. For some, it comes naturally while others have to really strive and go out of their way to find new sonic territories to explore. Cyrax is no stranger to being explorative and more than a little innovative with their sound that always has a progressive metal core but is never once afraid to take great influence from other genres to make for an experience that is wholly their own. For their newest creation, they see that taken to new heights.
Every now and then, we're met with works that are truly the definition of what it means to be ambitious. Just as easily can it lead to truly engaging material that pushes the very boundaries of the genre can it lead to the quick downfall of a band that sought to bite off more than they could chew for the performance. Looking at what Cyrax looked to deliver for their newest creation, "Novo Deus", I admit I was worried they would not succeed. Yet, with a clear nexus of progressive metal that brings together a true menagerie of different takes from different styles and worldly influences, the fourteen tracks of "Novo Deus" stand as an interesting surprise that has much more than what I think any of us could have anticipated. Experimental to the core and incredibly inclusive of many cultures from all around the world, there isn't a single track throughout the absolute entirety of the record that sound even close to another to ensure that at every turn Cyrax is trying something new, putting their all into it, and making it work with a staggering level of efficiency and depth to where you can really feel the roots of each tradition entrenched in the progressive metal sound that Cyrax has been cultivating for years now. This is the kind of record that ambitious acts think of in moments of wonder and artistic freedom, but rarely do we see one attempt it with a small percentage of that group coming out the other side of the process with a clear victory that cannot be defied.
"Novo Deus" is certainly not a cup of tea that is to catch the drift of many, but Cyrax has more than defied the odds in the crafting of this record with their experimental and innovative side on display more than ever before. Out of the wide array of need-to-know acts that are to be respected in the vast world of progressive metal, Cyrax certainly deserves to be hailed as one.
