I had a whole January TBR planned, with a readathon and everything... and then I remembered that I have rarely, successfully participated in a January readathon because I get nervous quickly. I've also learned, last year, that if I try to list every book I plan to read in a month, I will read none of those books. So, I'm probably going to read more than these 3 books, but these are my priorities.
So, here is a much more toned down TBR to start off my 2024!
Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire
I received an eARC of this book (!!!) and I cannot wait to continue this series! This book continues to follow the children of Eleanor West's School for Wayward Children on their adventures, now following Antsy. I don't know anything else about the specific adventure, but I'm excited. I'll also probably reread the previous two books, Where the Drowned Girls Go & Lost in the Moment and Found, to remind myself what happened.
The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz
This is my one hold over from the readathon I psyched myself out of fully participating in. It was a horror/thriller readathon and I still want to read this winter-y thriller. It's about writers who travel to this writing retreat, but when they arrive, they learn that whoever writes the best manuscript in a month at the retreat will get a publishing deal. I've heard good things about it, so I'm ready to give it a try!
This Is What America Looks Like: My Journey from Refugee to Congresswoman by Ilhan Omar
As you might have seen in my 2024 goals post, I have a lot of reading challenges I want to complete throughout the year. So, while I don't know which books I'll specifically read each month, I do need to start some of those.
I've had this memoir in my library wish-list for a while. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, shares her childhood story of fleeing Somalia and her time as a refugee in Kenya and then America. She narrates her own audiobook, and even if I don't get to it in Januray, I do hope to get to it sometime this year!
And those are the only books I'm listing! As I said, my goal is to not overwhelm myself at the start of the year, so I'll probably read more than these books, but you'll need to check out my wrap-up to see exactly what else I read!
Have you read any of these books? What are your January reading plans? Let me know in the comments!
