One of the best parts of December is reviewing all the Year-End lists from the various music publications (ours is coming soon). It's a great way to discover some excellent music I somehow missed in 2023. One of the great releases I am pleased to have discovered thanks to PopMatters' 30 Best Rock Albums of 2023 is Upper Wilds' Jupiter.
This Brooklyn trio have been making albums since 2017, so I'm certainly late to the party, but the trio make the kind of melodic noise rock that grabs your attention, raises your spirits and smacks you awake from whatever doldrums you may be wallowing in. It's hard to pick a track that stands out on the album as they're all good, but you can't go wrong with the opening number "Permanent Storm". There's almost a classical feel to the brash guitar intro, and the vocals are delivered with a commanding gusto that gives the song a sweeping affect.
