Despite how it can easily be argued that atmospheric black metal has become quite difficult to sift through in recent years as we see tons upon tons of names sprouting from every possible corner of the globe, there is, of course, loads of talent out there to the point that there's almost always something of immense note to lose yourself in. Some are able to raise themselves above much of the competition to put forth performances that are just wild to behold, and Ringarë is certainly such an act! Having resurrected itself but five years ago, it has been nothing but a dominating force in the style since. As if any more needed to prove that fact, it is with their third full-length album that this duo throws down what's arguably their most bombastic creation to date.
When we're presented with atmospheric black metal that really goes for the throat and tries to deliver an experience that stands out from much of what the rest of the scene puts forth, such a standard is oftentimes too high for some to attain despite their best efforts. Those who rise to the challenge and deliver, though, and immediately made known to listeners who are always wont to make sure that such excellence does not go unnoticed. Undoubtedly, Ringarë is such an act with this forthcoming splendor, "Of Momentous Endless Night", more than likely the last great stop for the genre before the year closes out. Four tracks spread across an eclectic and spectacular 42-minute runtime, Ringarë is certifiably at the top of their game for the absolute entirety of this effort. Taking into consideration every aspect of their sound and drawing upon years of exciting work in many other acts, "Of Momentous Endless Night" quickly transforms itself from what was already a highly anticipated piece for the style into a constant display of mastery and genius over the craft that can only be likened to the coldest winds in forgotten mountain passes whose communion with the deepest of night is what true magic in made of. Be it through immense riffage, a tremendous diversity when it comes to the approach of everything in the record, the vocals that are just as harsh as they are mesmerizing, or the atmospheres that only make their presence known when it is for maximum effect, Ringarë has truly made something exceptional with this release. A crowning achievement for all they've done thus far, "Of Momentous Endless Night" is delicious from top to bottom.
For all that has been done over the decades in the world of atmospheric black metal, to witness albums like this still come around after all of what's been accomplished is still lay your eyes upon undeniable magnificence where many would claim there is none. Ringarë has always been a name to watch, but it is with all they've wrought with "Of Momentous Endless Night" that the act has all but cemented itself as one of the true need-to-know names in the whole of the style without exception.
