On occasion when we see a split album come into being, it can be all too easy that the bands in question put forth material that are little more than B-sides or rarity tracks for the acts to bring out of the darkness the first opportunity they get. Somehow, my history with split albums has been quite fortunate in practically every regard as virtually every instance sees bands come to the table with aligned interests and a clear vision of what can happen when the sounds of two bands are brought together in exemplary fashion for a demonstration that is not to be missed. For their attempt at such, it would be crass of anyone to make the claim that either Ommnus or My Pitbull Lucifer missed their marks throughout the creation.
Dealing with splits like this, I'm reminded why there is always a reason to get excited about one. Having only heard of one of these acts before, to see the potential of another like-minded and similarly sounding act come to the table for a dual performance of real ferocity is something that is able to grab my attention without hearing so much as a single note. Ommnus, despite having only a single full-length album to its name beforehand, needed to prove absolutely nothing in its contribution of five tracks. They've already shown a significant amount of growth from their debut just two years prior, with their particular brand of heaviness a cross between doom metal and heavy rock to make for an explosive punch that is a gift which keeps on giving. Each of their tracks has real bounce to them that pulls you ever-further into their claws with the fact that there's only five of them almost a true tragedy, but that's when My Pitbull Lucifer comes into play and ensures the split doesn't end on a weak note of any sort. A more psychedelic approach that still has more than enough wallop to call its own in every given moment, My Pitbull Lucifer uses its six tracks to match the bounce of Ommnus almost perfectly with its own flavors and personality really allowing the split to go from what could have easily been a solid EP for Ommnus to a dual performance that is not to be underestimated. It's the first step out into the vast underground for My Pitbull Lucifer, but it is immediately that it has proven itself to be a name to keep a sharp eye on as they have easily gone toe-to-toe with a rising name whose own power is nothing the underestimate.
Dynamic and explorative for both the listener and each band in question, this is a prime split in practically every given instance. Neither act has done anything within the confines of these eleven tracks that deserves to be looked down upon as works that don't live up to their potential in splendid form. Both Ommnus and My Pitbull Lucifer has delivered the goods in heaps for the whole of the split, and I'm more than keen to see what these two acts are able to bring forth in the future following such a promising split.
