I screwed up. Big time. I hurt someone, and I hate myself for it.
I'm barely eighteen and already completely exhausted. Tired of being haunted by secrets and guilt.
My biggest regret, though, is keeping it all from Adam—my best friend, teammate, protector. My everything since I can remember.
And how do I repay him? By keeping these secrets locked up inside. Secrets I know would destroy us.
But I'm not sure how much longer I can do it. No matter how catastrophic the consequences.
Adam Bates
He won't talk to me.
He's never kept secrets from me before. We're both quiet guys who keep to ourselves. But that's never applied to each other.
I know something is wrong, but my best friend has shut me out.
How can I keep him safe if he won't talk to me?
All my life, I've taken on this role—doing what's right, no matter what. Watching out for everyone, on and off the field—especially Zach.
And I won't fail him now, when he needs me more than ever.
Because this is who I am and what I do . . .
I'm the protector.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]
Protector by Nicole Dykes is the final book in the Kensley Panthers series. Adam Bates knows what he wants from his life, to continue the legacy of his family farm and spend his down time with his best friend Zach. Unfortunately, Zach's life is not so clear cut. Zach tries to balance his time between school, sports, and his younger sisters. Adam is the shining spot in Zach's life and it isn't until the two divulge long held secrets that Zach sees that his future with Adam may be different than either realized.
I couldn't help but be enamored by Adam and Zach. The two were just too precious for words. Zach's family life puts so much pressure on him and Adam tries to alleviate any stress he can. The two find a new form of stress relief after they admit to secrets they've been keeping. I loved the two of them exploring together and taking things slow. Adam's single minded focus on his future gives Zach a guiding light to follow and Zach keeps Adam grounded and reminds him there is more than farming.
Honestly, when Zach looks at me with that sort of goofy awe, I just feel kind of… warm inside. When he's around, everything feels right.
*Trigger Warning* (view spoiler) Although none of the prior books were light hearted in the sense of coming out in a small town this story took on another extremely difficult topic. I appreciated that the author chose not to sugar coat the situation and although it left you feeling so bad for Zach and his sisters the reality of their situation felt authentic.
4 stars for Zach and Adam opening themselves up to a future together.
