Blurb:
Vera Gallagher is chasing constant. For four years, her life was anything but normal. And the years before that she refuses to even remember. Dwelling on the past only hurts. Life is fragile, a lesson her mother taught her well. She's determined not to waste a moment of her newfound freedom.
Maybe some would consider her crush on Mateo Eden wasted time. Maybe some would call her a fool for loving a man who hasn't once dropped a crumb of interest her way. Still, to Vera, it's Mateo or nothing.
He's handsome. Charming. Witty. And he loves his family the way Vera loves—with her whole heart.
Maybe he'll never notice her. Maybe she's too damaged, too broken, to find that normal life she craves. Maybe her secrets will always keep them apart. But Vera will love him anyway. Whether Mateo realizes it or not.
My 5* Review:
Sable Peak is the final instalment in The Edens series by Devney Perry. It is a great story to end this excellent series about this fictional family. This time we have Mateo Eden and Vera Gallagher in a small town, single dad, unrequited love story. It is divided into two parts - Before and After,
which is clever because these time frames actually mean different things to each of them. In the the last book we met Vera and found out bits behind her tragic story, but Devney also left us with a cliffhanger about Mateo and his past in Alaska. Now we get to find out about Mateo's shocking
announcement and the secrets Vera is hiding. What will happen when the truth is revealed?
Since arriving in Quincy, Vance and Lyla have been looking after Vera. She is attempting to live a normal life after her not-normal past. She lived as a survivalist for four years in the woods with her dad after a horrendous event changed their lives forever. She misses her dad terribly and constantly wonders where he is and if he is alright. She is enjoying working at Eden Coffee while taking small steps to be the woman she might have become if not for before. The Eden family have taken her under their wing and are slowly helping her to adjust. They are a chaotic group but one family member has caught her eye. She has a crush on Mateo and it is so sweet how she blushes and gets nervous around him, especially when he winks at her.
Mateo had returned home from Alaska after a devastating break up and picked up his life helping his family. He was feeling lost as had no plans for his future and missed flying. The whole family is shocked when he announces he has a daughter and must go back to Alaska. He brings home baby Alaina 'Allie' and concentrates on being a single dad until one night an unexpected kiss opens a world of possibilities to him. His mum knew Vera fancied Mateo and wondered when he'd notice but he didn't know she felt that way for him.

Their relationship needs a lot of work and understanding. He has to consider his daughter and has to work out his anger at Vera's dad for attacking Lyla. He also has to deal with believing that Cormac is a murderer who'd kept his daughter captive until she escaped. Vance had told him Vera had refused to talk about it and he didn't think she knew all the truth over what happened. How was he going to get her to open up and let it all out. Mateo is faced with the lies and secrets over her past but as a father begins to understand Cormac's actions.
She's never had a serious relationship and although she really wants him, she finds it hard to commit when she is still traumatised by her past. The chemistry between them is amazing but she struggles with her feelings for him because she's waited so long for him to see her so it's a dream come true. Could she keep her secrets from Mateo and be with him, especially when she is still going out looking for her dad on Sable Peak. She has kept it all locked up inside for so long, would she ever be able to share the details of her past?
I loved that they both eventually find a way to open up and reveal the truth. Both their stories are sad but I felt it helped them develop a true understanding and an honest friendship to base their romance on. Mateo is so kind and works at convincing her she not alone anymore and her new family love her very much. He does so much to stop her worrying and takes risks to help her. It was nice seeing her become more confident, help with Allie and encourage him to fly again. I loved how he checks on how she was by using the weather and making her life go from overcast and grey to clear and a million!
A dramatic event brings her past to a closure and the whole family come together to help the couple out. We find out how all the other couples are doing and meet the new additions. It ends with two lovely epilogues, one from each of them to finish their story and conclude the series.
