| Jen Lucas Dec 24 | #Bookvent - Celebrating my top reads of 2023 And here we are - my favourite read of 2023. I have had a wonderful year full of fabulous books, and I can honestly say that this has been one of the hardest decisions to come to in all my years of running Bookvent. There have been some really excellent books this year but this one really stuck with me from the moment I read it. Like the author, I've been fascinated. by the golden age of cinema, growing up watching old black and white movies and musicals with my Nan, everything from Charlie Chaplin to Katherine Hepburn, Laurel and Hardy to Gene Kelly and many more besides. There is something really honest and reassuring about those old back and white movies with their wobbly sets and regularly over the top melodrama, something you just don't feel in this era of CGI and fakery. Sure - they're a spectacle, but it's just not the same. There is a reason one of my all time favourite movies is Sunset Boulevard and this, my 2023 Book of the Year, is based around that same era - at the dawn of a whole new ear for the movie industry. In some respects it has something very much in common with my previous bookvent choice but the setting and the history in this particular read just had the edge. If you haven't guessed it by now, you need to expand your reading horizons.
