| canadamatt Dec 31 | Eight stars A popular story this time of year, Hans Christian Andersen's piece about a destitute girl who seeks nothing more than warmth, both physical and emotional, is truly memorable. While others hustle down the streets on New Year's Even, a little girl is freezing amongst the snowdrifts. Sent out to sell matches to help support her abusive father, the girl lights a few and sees wonderful images. She is dazzled with foods, happiness, as well as a vision of a long-departed relative. While she does not end the story as energized, one cannot deny that she found happiness on that bitterly cold night before the calendars switched over to something new. I know the story well, but have never actually read Andersen's classic holiday story. It took me but a few moments, but it touched my heart and I am pleased to have taken the time. Andersen offers up a strong depiction of the vast differences , which are exacerbated over the holidays, but also the power of love and connection to others, which warms many a heart! Kudos, Mr. Andersen, for this wonderful piece! | | | |
