Well hello, 2024.
I honestly can't believe we're into the new year already. The last few months have been extremely busy and they've flown by while also feeling like the slowest few months ever. Before we really get into 2024 content, I've got to wrap-up 2023. So today we're starting with talking through my reading goals and how I went.
This comes with a little bit of a backstory. In January, I set myself a bunch of goals as usual but then by the midway point in July, many of those goals weren't relevant to my reading anymore so I dropped them and gave myself new ones. I have no regrets about doing that. I like to reassess my goals every quarter and if they're not working for me, I can adjust them. I think that's important because what seems important to us in January is often not important by December, and that's okay.
Also, from mid-November when my partner and I started to pack up for our interstate move, reading just wasn't a priority anymore. In previous years, I probably would've made more of these goals but trying to pack up your entire life in a month and a half just doesn't leave much time for anything else. Again, that's okay.
So with all that said, let's get into the wrap-up of my 2023 goals.
Read 180 Books
We're not off to a good start because I didn't make this goal. I fell behind in March and never caught up again, and then December was my worst reading month in years. I got pretty close, I finished with 166 for the year.
Equal or less books on my TBR
Rather than set an unachievable number for my physical TBR, in 2023 it was just about maintaining it. I'm so glad to say that I did manage to do that, and in fact, I managed to reduce my TBR significantly. I started the year with 313 and I'm proud to say I'm ending it with 260—that's a difference for 53 which I'm very happy with!
Continue 35 series
This was my most difficult goal. I started the year with the plan of continuing 50 and then had to drop it down when it became obvious I wouldn't get there. I thought I'd get close to the 35 at least but I ended up only with 19. This was more about the way I set up the goal than anything else, so I've reworked it for 2024.
Listen to 15 audiobooks
Considering I only added this goal in July, I did pretty well to get to 11. Out of those 11, quite a few of them were my favourite reads of the year so I definitely think getting into audiobooks this year was a success for me.
Read 25% of 2023 purchases
I'm glad that out of the two goals I did achieve this is one of them. I bought a lot of books this year and I'm happy that I'm actually trying to pick them up. Although I will admit that I just barely made this goal—had I been reading as usual this month, I would've probably had an extra 4 or 5 off this list.
Read 25 non fiction books
This is another one I got very close to. I ended the year with 23 read, but I'd kind of stupidly packed away all of my non-fiction books midway through December so I couldn't complete this one. I think 23 out of 25 is still extremely good.
How did you go with your goals? What are you planning for 2024? I'll be posting about my own goals for the upcoming year in a few days so I'll see you all again then.
