`Remember her name. Johana Gustawsson has become a leading figure in French crime fiction [and] Yule Island is impossible to put down´

Le Monde

Book Blurb

An art expert joins a detective to investigate a horrific murder on a Swedish island, leading them to a mystery rooted in Viking rites and Scandinavia's deepest, darkest winter. The Queen of French Noir returns with a chilling, utterly captivating historical thriller, based on a true story.

Art expert Emma Lindahl is anxious when she's asked to appraise the antiques and artefacts in the infamous manor house of one of Sweden's wealthiest families, on the island of Storholmen, where a young woman was murdered nine years earlier, her killer never found.

Emma must work alone, and with the Gussman family apparently avoiding her, she sees virtually no one in the house. Do they have something to hide?

As she goes about her painstaking work and one shocking discovery yields clues that lead to another, Emma becomes determined to uncover the secrets of the house and its occupants.

When the lifeless body of another young woman is found in the icy waters surrounding the island, Detective Karl Rosén arrives to investigate, and memories of his failure to solve the first case come rushing back. Could this young woman's tragic death somehow hold the key to the first?

Battling her own demons, Emma joins forces with Karl to embark upon a chilling investigation, plunging them into horrifying secrets from the past – Viking rites and tainted love – and Scandinavia's deepest, darkest winter…

My thoughts

We have three perspectives throughout Yule Island Emma, Karl and Viktoria through these voices we are brought a chilling and shocking story of murder and sacrifice.

Viktoria is a voice from the past. Now working on the island of Storholmen she becomes worried for her daughter, Josephine, who is concerned for her friend Thor who may be being mistreated. Would her employer really harm a child?

Emma is an art expert brought to Storholmen to appraise the Gussman family collection. The island has an infamous history when a teenage girl was killed and left hanging from a tree located on the Gussman property. Emma is dubious about working there but it's such an amazing opportunity. She becomes increasingly alarmed when she finds a note sparking memories of a tragedy never forgotten. She is compelled to look for answers. Will she find them?

Karl is a police detective. He is called to the scene of a body found dead in the ice cold waters surrounding the island. It's a young woman. He was the detective on the unsolved murder of the victim found hanging on Storholmen nearly a decade ago. This brings back memories of that unsolved case. Are there connections? Will Karl be able to solve this murder?

As Emma and Karl pool information could there be resolution for both?

Johana Gustawasson writes impeccably bringing a story of murder, Viking ritual, loss and guilt. Layer upon layer of mystery, darkness and mind blowing twist upon twist shocking and agonising in what they reveal.

The characters are captivating, the story is darkly complex and quite brilliant in its execution. It was a really great read, this book is simply a-maz-ing! I highly recommend it.
