I've been reading a lot about reading challenges this month and am interested in the following. Some I've not done before, others I have.

The Historical Fiction Reading Challenge for 2024.

Don't forget to use the challenge hashtag #histficreadingchallenge.
My challenge
Victorian Reader - 5 books or Renaissance Reader - 10 books. I do hope that I've got this right it seems to me that if you read pretty much any classic book you're reading Historical Fiction and can participate. I thought 10 books would be a good start - one a month with a couple of free months because things can get in the way of plans! - however, I'll be happy if I read 5 books.
I've left a message on Marg's site for my initial joining and will then post my book thoughts through the year on the relevant months.
Note: I expect many of these books will also meet other challenges requirements and so they will count on those as well.
Reading Orwell 2024
#ReadingOrwell24 is hosted by Brona's Books. The aim is simple – to read any or all of the Orwells or Orwell-related books on your TBR stack at any time throughout 2024. New books, old books, borrowed books, audio, rereads, adaptations, biographies, fiction and non-fiction are welcome.
How to join in Reading Orwell?
Simply leave a comment here or write a list of which books/essays you might like to read, linking back to this post. It's that simple and flexible.
If you'd rather take a photo of your Orwells or share on socials you can use #ReadingOrwell24 (Brona's Books is on Instagram @this_r_e_a_d_i_n_g_life and Bluesky).
My challenge
I have both books by Orwell and Orwell-related books on my TBR so I'm already loving this challenge as there is no specific number of books that need reading be it one, five or more it's up to you.
My possible list is: Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit | Homage to Catalonia | Down and Out in Paris and London and if I decide to read more or change any of the books I'm not going to worry if these three don't get read as I also have Animal Farm, 1984 and more some may be re-reads nevertheless I really would like to read the Solnit even if that is the only one I do read!
Again, where relevant books from this challenge count towards other challenges I will use on each of them.
Moomin Week
If you read Mallika aka potpourri2015's July Wrap Up Post or Paula at the Book Jotter's Weekly Wind Up #340 or Chris at Calmgrove's post A Moomin Memoir, last week, you will have noticed that plans were afoot for a celebration!
Or two? Paula shared the wonderful news of her upcoming wedding this year, to be set around a Moomin theme!
So that all bloggers can join in the celebration Chris at Calmgrove and Mallika will be hosting a one off event, a #MoominWeek! The celebration will run from 26 August to 1st September 2024* which straddles the month of Tove Jansson's birth month and the month of Paula's wedding celebration.
All this week* you are invited to share posts on anything Moomin:
read a Moomin book (or two or three) and review, a picture book or comic, watch an adaptation, or write about your favourite characters, books or experiences reading/watching Moomin generally, anything's welcome.
Mallika (potpourri2015)
My challenge
I hope to read and share my thoughts on a Tove Jansson book in #MoominWeek on my blog and social media.
Note: these books may also meet other challenge requirements and so they will count on those as well.
Please join Gilion at Rose City Reader for the twelfth edition of our Grand Tour of Europe through books! The European Reading Challenge has been going strong since 2012. Choose your own level of commitment to complete the challenge. There is a Jet Setter Prize for the person who visits the most countries between the covers.
THE GIST: The idea is to read books set in European countries or books by European authors. The books can be of any genre – fiction, nonfiction, novels, short stories, memoirs, travel guides, cookbooks, biography, poetry, whatever. You can participate at different levels, but each book must represent a different country — either written by an author from a different country or set in a different country, no two books from the same country.
This challenge runs from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024.
To participate in the challenge, sign up at the levels below. If you want to go on to compete for the Prize, keep reading!
FIVE STAR (DELUXE ENTOURAGE): Read at least five books by different European authors or books set in different European countries.
FOUR STAR (HONEYMOONER): Read four qualifying books.
THREE STAR (BUSINESS TRAVELER): Read three qualifying books.
TWO STAR (ADVENTURER): Read two qualifying books.
ONE STAR (PENSIONE WEEKENDER): Read just one qualifying book.
My challenge
I read a fair number of European books (in translation or in English) so I'm going for FIVE STAR (Deluxe Entourage). I hope I'm not being too ambitious as I have to ensure I read one book from five European countries.
I will count anything read on this challenge towards my other challenges (and vice versa).
I took part in the challenges below last year and I'll be doing so again as long as they take place.
Reading Ireland Month (March) | Daphne Du Maurier reading week (May) | Simon from Stuck in a Book and Karen from Kaggsy's Bookish Ramblings are the hosts for 'The (insert year) Club'. This time it's 1937 and The 1937 Club will take place 15-23 April 2024. | Novellas in November* (#NovNov) | 20 Books of Summer* (1 June - 1Sept) | (both* these challenges are hosted by Cathy@746books)
Again, when these books also meet other challenge requirements they will count on those as well.
The Classic Club
The Classics Club was started on March 7, 2012 by a blogger who wanted to see more people posting about classics literature in the blogosphere. Her goal was to, "unite those of us who like to blog about classic literature, as well as to inspire people to make the classics an integral part of life." She thought about several ideas but finally settled on inviting people to make a list of (at least 50) classic titles they intend to read and blog about within the next five years. After a few months, the club grew, and it was decided to create a separate site to house everything related to The Classics Club. And this blog was born! The club moved here in August 2012.So far it has all these members who have read a lot.
For more information, please see this page for FAQs on how to join the club, how to submit a post on the Reviews Page, how to submit an event on the Events Page, etc.
Also, please note — the activities on the site (memes, check-ins, etc) are intended to contribute to the reading journey of those who seek a bit of connection with the group. None of these extra activities are intended to curb your reading joy. If you prefer to be silent in this club, and focus on the books, that's certainly encouraged and respected.
My challenge
I am preparing a list for this challenge and once I join and submit my list I will also post it on my blog along with my thoughts which I'll link to the Classic Club reviews page.
I will read 50 books over five years starting from the date I join and submit my list.
Note: when these books meet other challenge requirements they will count on those as well.
I haven't joined this many challenges before so all of this, my book club and the occasional BlogTour (I'm fully booked through July) should keep me busy reading throughout 2024!
Firstly, I need to catch up on my rather belated thoughts of books read in 2023 although some couldn't be shared until this month, so it's not as bad as it sounds!
Then I need to do some master list posts for each challenge in the appropriate timescale and link those were required to the hosting blog.
What do you think? Have I been over ambitious? Are you joining any of these challenges - if so, which? Maybe you have other plans for this year? Let me know in the comments below I'd love to read your thoughts.
