HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I had planned to write reviews for these books before the clock struck midnight, but time got away from me. I don't want to enter the new year still writing reviews for books I read last year, even if it was only a few days ago, so I am just going to list the last few books I read here with a few words on each.
Open Water - Caleb Azumah Nelson
Book 88
I heard great things about this but I just couldn't get into it. I must have missed something, but I just didn't enjoy it all that much.
The Labyrinth - Simon Stalenhag
Book 89
Love these books, this one is no different. A great combination of dystopian art and story. Very enjoyable.
Prophet Song - Paul Lynch
Book 90
My first thoughts on finishing this were "Bloody Hell". I thought it was fantastic. One of my books of the year for sure. Given all the plaudits it has received already I don't really think I need to say any more.
Earth - John Boyne
Book 91
Earth continues John Boyne's Elements series. It is a great continuation to the series and features one of the less prominent characters from the first book, Water, in the role of protagonist. Our main character is a gay footballer, and while his team mates seem to know he is gay, the wide world does not. The story main takes place during a court case where he and his team mate are on trial for rape and assisted rape. It is certainly a tough subject but I think John tackles it quite well, but I am interested to see how it fares in the big wide world. Out 2024.
Humans - Tom Phillips
Book 92
My last book of the year, officially took me four months to read. I started it September and for reasons unknown even to me I just... stopped, in the middle of a chapter. I knew I was enjoying it, so I don't know why I put it aside. Anyway, I picked it back up during my Christmas holidays and finished it over the course of a few days. I thought it was brilliant for the most part, and very funny. It is clear to see which side of the political divide the author rests on, but they also divvy up the blame for just how much all of humanity has messed up quite evenly. A really good read.
