Review: Where do I begin with my second audiobook of 2024. Now this one had been on my TBR pile for three years. Better late than never. Now where do I start? I have seen that The Chalet was likened to Ruth Ware's One By One - I guess because of the location, the skiing and the weather. But for me that is where the similarities end. This novel takes us to two different timelines with a number of interlinked stories with the characters a long the way.
Now it's been a long time since I've read or listened to a book where I've disliked almost all of the characters and that's no disrespect to the author they are just a horrid bunch. There were a few who I felt for but even they frustrated me at times, without ruining any of the story there is an element of sexual assault that had me angry and saddened. Yet the female in question was doubting herself and wondering if it was her fault. This is where I found myself internally shouting at her. It's apparent that this changed the course of her life and she did in some ways realise this wasn't on her at all.
The other thing that could confuse readers is there are so many people to keep track with. Thankfully we are given a date check and name of the person at the beginning of each chapter which helped me a lot. But I know that some people wouldn't be able to audio a book like this. The differing voices helped - although I do laugh a lot when they are extremely posh voices.
What I really enjoyed about this story was I couldn't work it out and even at the end it was like ooooh. So that definitely kept me on my toes and guessing. For a long while I was also clueless as to what man had died and I wasn't expecting it that way around although that being said it changes the story for two more people involved.
An interesting read, I don't believe I've read anything from this author previously I would be up for reading another from them. It will be interesting to see if I hate the characters across the board. A thriller that will keep you on your toes from start to finish.
