Music is an interesting and pervasive force in our world. These days, talented artists are popping up in all corners of the internet, and some major talents are hiding right under our noses. One day you'll be laughing out loud watching a TikTok, the next you'll be grooving to a recommended discovery on Spotify, and months later you'll figure out that the two creators were actually the same person. This happened to me with artist, Charlotte Cardin.
She had been a featured vocalist on content creator Labulin's TikTok page. Labulin has garnered fame for taking actual conversation threads from the internet and turning them into songs. In one of his videos, he performs song with Cardin about people who are asking about pregnancy on Yahoo! Answers. The song is structured simply with matching visualizations; and features rising dramatics as the song crescendos. It even emphasizes the spelling errors, incorrect pronunciations and grammatical mistakes one might find on such an internet forum.
This song - "Am I Pregnant?", which doesn't have an official name, has garnered a massive following with 3.5 million views on Labulin's TikTok, and 6.4 million on his Youtube Channel. Further more, it has become a comical staple for those going through pregnancy.
"Some days I feel 'pegrant', other days I feel 'gregnant', and when I'm feeling really good in my pregnancy, it's 'pregonananant'. Pregnancy can be difficult, and this song has given me a playful way to express to my partner how I am feeling, and it's added a lot of joy and silliness to this time in my life."
- New Yorker (9 months pregnant)
The point is, this song is catchy and funny—and music, being the ever pervasive force, has also primed us all to associate Charlotte Cardin's voice with this ticklish delight of a song. I imagine this came into play on a subconscious level when Cardin's album "99 Nights" quickly became one of my most listened albums of the year.
The album is cohesive, well produced, and sexy. Some favorites from the album include, "Puppy", "Confetti" (which also has a newly released French version), and "Jim Carrey" (also produced by Labulin). Her voice is earthy and she has a great vocal habit of going into a gentle head voice when she reaches her higher ranges—showing us she can connect with the audience without resorting to belting and loudness. The art of her subtlety and Frenchness imparts beautifully into her music.
I have shown this artist to many a friend, and hope that you find her as enjoyable as we do here at the Indy Review.
